South Africa: The Press and the Politics of Liberation

London: Carleton House (1978), 197 pp.
"An analysis of the mass media in South Africa as instruments of oppression or liberation and their role in effecting change or perpetuating the status quo. Chimutengwende examines the operation of the press within the South African socio-economic and legislative system and in relation to the blacks' struggle for liberation, ending with conclusions as the role of the press in affecting change or maintaining the status quo. For the latter he has drawn heavily on communication theory. This is a measured and well-reasoned study that challenges some Western concepts of freedom of the press. Emphasis is on print media."
