Creating effective environmental communication strategies: A ten step guide for practitioners

"Creating Effective Environmental Communication Strategies offers conservation professionals a straightforward, ten-step guide for designing and delivering strategic communication that drives measurable conservation impacts. At its core, the guide recognises that conservation succeeds only when people change unsustainable practices as a result of targeted attitude changes and knowledge gains. In this process, information alone is not the missing link between a problem and a solution. Instead, the authors frame communication as a two-way, participatory dialogue in which meaning and messages are co-created by and with audiences rather than bombarded on them. Drawing on holistic learning models (Head-Heart-Hands) and KAP-related social marketing insights about incentives, audience segmentation, media selection, and storytelling the guide shows practitioners how to move all parties involved from “being aware” to “ready for action” in ten logically consistent steps that build on each other. The ten steps unfold across four phases of a project life cycle. Assessment covers situation analysis, stakeholder and KAP research, and the drafting of specific, measurable communication objectives. Planning stress-tests the change hypothesis, secures partner buy-in, and selects the most effective media mix for each audience segment. Production walks teams through message design, media and material production, and pre-testing for clarity, socio-cultural fit, and call for action. Finally, Action & Reflection guides roll-out, adaptive management, and rigorous monitoring and evaluation (M&E) that feed lessons back into future work. Throughout this management cycle, the guide insists on regular learning loops so adjustments happen in real time rather than ex-post. A separate SeedBox of more than thirty plug-and-play so-called “seeds”—stakeholder maps, force field diagrams, media use planners, indicator scorecards, and more—anchors every step, enabling users to apply concepts immediately without reinventing templates. Case studies such as Venezuela’s Flying Together campaign related to threatened bird species and the nationwide conservation radio drama as part of My Green Mongolia translate theory into real-world outcomes and demonstrate how adaptable the framework is to different cultures, languages, and resource levels." Environmental Journalism in Cambodia: Mapping the Landscape, Challenges, and Support Needs

The profession remains male-dominated, with survey results indicating that men account for approximately 77% of respondents, while women represent 23%. Qualitative findings suggest that cultural norms and newsroom practices may influence field assignments and mobility, sometimes limiting opportunities for women journalists to participate in environmental reporting in remote areas.Environmental reporting is concentrated on issues such as deforestation, land disputes, pollution, and climate-related challenges. Journalists rely heavily on local communities (89%) and civil society organizations (55%) as sources of information, while fewer rely on official sources or experts. The study highlights that environmental journalists frequently face significant risks and structural barriers in the course of their work. Survey findings show that many journalists perceive environmental reporting as unsafe. Approximately 62% of 74 respondents reported feeling unsafe, while 11% (8 respondents) reported feeling very unsafe when covering environmental issues. Monitoring data collected by CamboJA also shows that journalists continue to face violations linked to their reporting activities. In 2025, CamboJA documented 61 human rights violations affecting 57 journalists, including five women journalists. Among these cases, seven were related to journalists covering environmental issues, making environmental reporting one of the topics most associated with violations against journalists. The study also identifies several barriers that limit environmental reporting, including pressure from local authorities (66%), legal restrictions (54%), and lack of access to reliable data or official information (47%). Limited time and resources, as well as gaps in technical knowledge related to environmental reporting, also affect journalists’ ability to conduct in-depth reporting." (Key findings, pages 2-3) more

Climate Disinformation in Thailand: Negating Indigenous Peoples’ Identity

First, it identifies fou ... r distinct forms of climate disinformation in Thailand: one-sided reporting, where the media spotlights government and corporate initiatives while omitting their social and environmental harms, whether due to political pressure or economic incentives; greenwashing, where corporations exaggerate or misrepresent their sustainability practices to obscure their ongoing environmentally destructive activities; false climate solutions promoted as climate action which fails to address the root causes of climate change while leaving IP communities socially and economically disadvantaged; scapegoating of IPs where Indigenous communities are falsely portrayed as primary drivers of deforestation, legitimising displacement and marginalisation. Second, it demonstrates four ways in which climate disinformation harms IPs, each reinforcing the negation of their identities: exclusion from decision-making: by either barring their participation outright or dismissing their inputs in decision-making processes, IPs’ Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) is removed thereby negating their identities as owners and stewards of their land; criminalisation: the strategic misuse of “climate change” laws to negate IP identity and erase the legitimacy of IPs’ traditions and practices in environmental stewardship; and the use of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) intimidate advocates for challenging climate disinformation; forced evictions: conservation and development narratives justify deterritorialisation that severs spiritual, cultural and economic ties to ancestral lands which forms the core of IPs’ identities; intimidation and violence: harassment, threats and attacks undermining the capacity of IPs to resist projects and actions that harm them, their environment and their way of life. Third, to address climate disinformation and safeguard Indigenous Peoples’ (IPs) rights and identities in Thailand, this report outlines a list of multi-stakeholder recommendations: UN bodies should integrate climate disinformation into their human rights monitoring and climate action frameworks and provide guidance to Thailand on implementing its international obligations; the Thai government should embed safeguards against climate disinformation into national climate and environmental policies, strengthen legal protections for IPs, ensure meaningful participation of IP communities in decision-making and improve transparency and accountability in environmental governance; international NGOs (INGOs) should collaborate with IP organisations to map, document and respond to climate disinformation, provide sustained technical capacity-building and funding, and support advocacy and litigation to defend IP rights; civil society organisations (CSOs) should monitor disinformation targeting IPs, co-develop counter-narratives with IP communities and educational content to empower both IPs and the broader public and expand legal aid support; the media sector should prioritise constructive and investigative journalism on climate, environmental, and IP issues; expand coverage in Indigenous languages and culturally appropriate formats; collaborate with IP organisations on fact-checking and monitoring disinformation; and amplify Indigenous perspectives through both national and international outlets; technology companies should strengthen content moderation against climate disinformation, flag misleading project information and invest in digital literacy and connectivity initiatives for rural and Indigenous communities; indigenous communities and organisations should build monitoring networks to identify and counter disinformation, strengthen alliances with independent and Indigenous media, conduct and participate in capacity-building workshops and use digital tools to amplify their voices and safeguard knowledge."
