There are also some interesting papers on alternative publishing, and the alternative press, under the former repressive apartheid regime." (Hans M. world. Even teenagers, with their passion for romance and hero fantasies, will happily immerse themselves in a thick book [...] The growth of children’s books can also be measured by their economic good health. In 2023, the sector was worth almost US$12 billion worldwide, making it a publishing heavyweight in many countries. And this boom is not just due to the success of some global bestsellers. Everywhere, passionate publishers are producing quality books, including in non-mainstream languages. The book What makes us human, co-published by UNESCO, and already available in twenty-one editions, illustrates this approach well. And yet, despite its economic, symbolic, educational and cultural heft, children’s literature continues to suffer from a lack of recognition. Despite its successes, very little critical space is dedicated to the genre in the traditional media. It’s as if writing for children remains – in the minds of many – a minor activity, an eternal sub-genre." (Editorial)

"Of all the aspects of making a book, design is perhaps the most mysterious. Authors and readers surely realize that covers are designed objects that, like it or not, books are commonly judged by. But a book's interior is also the product of a designer's careful attention to such matters as where th

e page numbers go or how wide the margins are. Even publishing professionals-editors, agents, marketing staff-often have only the vaguest idea of how designers use type, color, space, and other elements to turn manuscripts into visually distinctive and compelling books. This is the first book that explains what designers do for the benefit of all the "word people" involved in making (and enjoying) books. By demystifying how she and her fellow design professionals approach their tasks, Debbie Berne seeks to make authors and publishing colleagues informed partners in design decisions and to ensure the process is collaborative from start to finish. She considers self-published as well as traditionally published authors in her advice. And along the way, she offers delightful reflections on how each part of a book functions and how they ideally come together as a package for the ultimate benefit of the reader." new ‘Publishing & Book Culture in Africa Network’ sometime during the course of 2023. As is demonstrated by the extensive listings of new literature in the repository, much continues to be written about the formidable challenges facing the book industries in Africa today, and the repository aims to provide quick access to key literature about the many aspects of book culture, and publishing and book development in Sub-Saharan Africa generally; and at the same time provides a kind of mapping of the past. The initial pilot edition offers access to over a thousand fully and critically annotated records, published through to the end of September 2022. At this time, scope and coverage is limited to literature about publishing, book development, and book history and culture in anglophone sub-Saharan Africa. It is hoped that the repository can be expanded in the future by the inclusion of new material on a regular and systematic basis; collected, analysed, and written up by way of collaborative curation of the repository. It is also anticipated that select literature on the book industries in francophone Africa, and North Africa, can be added to the repository at some point in the future." (Introduction)
