Commbox is an online and physical library aimed at facilitating knowledge on media and communication in Africa, Asia & Pacific, Latin America & the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Central, Eastern & Southeast Europe.
It specializes on open access publications originating from or concerning the Global South and puts special emphasis on practical guides and training materials and evaluation reports. Commbox also includes academic publications as far as they cover issues of relevance for international media development cooperation & development communication. Print and restricted access publications cannot be downloaded or borrowed, but may be available at libraries participating in the WorldCat global library catalogue.
The database draws on the library that the Catholic Media Council (CAMECO) in Aachen, Germany, has compiled from all over the world since it was founded in 1969. The collection ranges from the beginnings of international media assistance to the present day.
Commbox has established partnerships with the Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM) at Sheffield University, the Centre for Development Communication (C4DC) at Leipzig University, and the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), which curate their own Special Collections. In addition, integration with online libraries from the Global South is being pursued, beginning with a shared interface with the online library of the Latin American Centre for Advanced Communication Studies CIESPAL in Quito, Ecuador.
