"Africa's history of publishing is long and multilayered and within these layers is Heinemann's African Writers Series founded in 1962 to nurture indigenous creative writing. This research addresses the contemporary relevance of Heinemann's African Writers Series (AWS) in Nigeria. It examines the cu

rrent value of the AWS for secondary school students, teachers and retailers, as the examination board in Nigeria continues to recommend the AWS among the prescribed texts for the study and assessment of literature in English. This study is important because these classics represent more than a set of prescribed texts of an academic program for the present-day audience. In fact the AWS is important not only for the history of publishing in Africa but also for teaching African literature. The research approach adopted in this dissertation is qualitative combined with empirical research which was obtained from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings from the research identified how the AWS shifted its focus from a general readership market to providing texts for school; it also critically analysed its general relevance on the African literary scene and focused on its enduring significance for secondary school students and teachers of literature in English. In addition, it provides insight into the role of school book retailers as agents of distribution for the authorised AWS texts. The principal conclusions drawn from this study are: the AWS has an enduring legacy. It epitomises historical, cultural, literary and symbolic value for students and teachers and is a pivotal point in the discussions on the culture of publishing in Africa. However, there is need to study the challenges of traditional adherence to canonical lists, to add contemporary voices who address current issues to the prescribed list and resolve the imbalance between demand and supply which affects availability of core texts and encourages piracy." ant sind, soll der zweite Teil die praktische Umsetzung publikationsunterstützender Angebote veranschaulichen. "We believe every child should own a hundred books by the age of five. In South Africa, that means giving 600 million free books to children who could never afford to buy them. Every day we lose, more children grow up unable to read and write well, and to enjoy the worlds that books open up. Every o

ne of us can help to give lots of free books to very young children. Most importantly, these books should be: new, African stories; with characters they recognise; in languages they speak; beautiful enough to love for a lifetime. There are two sides to getting new, better books into children's hands: 1. Book creation: writing, illustration and design, guided by an editor (Output: print and digital files than anyone can download and share); 2. Book distribution: printing, delivering and handing out to children and parents (This includes reading on mobile phones). Book Dash creates books. We support others in distributing them to children. Our book-creation process is where our name comes from: a Book Dash is a single day when volunteer teams of skilled creative professionals come together to create new children's storybooks in just 12 hours. Each team comprises a writer, an illustrator, and a designer. The teams have twelve hours to create one book per team. We provide expert editors, tech support, a great venue, great food and lots of coffee." (Page 3-4)

academic journals. They reveal how publishers continue to adapt to a fast-changing and highly interconnected world, in which printed books have proved resilient alongside ebooks and the growth of audio. Major themes are explored, including the development of digital products and the use of social media in book marketing, as well as those that affect publishers’ businesses, such as the rise of internet retailing; rental models for student textbooks; and open access, where academic content is free to the user. Case studies from industry experts give fascinating perspectives on topics such as crowdfunding, self-publishing and how authors can market themselves. The book provides excellent overviews of the main aspects of the publishing process: commissioning authors, product development, design and production, marketing, sales and distribution."
