this book - covering the issues of media freedom, pluralism, independence and access to information. Journalists’ safety, gendersensitive reporting, and the role of the Internet are amongst the topics covered. In a nutshell, progress has been made since 1991, but much remains to be achieved. There’s a grave danger that the momentum of media freedom is slowing and even reversing in many countries. Meanwhile, the rise of new communications technologies puts pressure on African journalists to live up to their ideals more than ever." (Back cover)

"The UNESCO Guidebook is now available in an updated and supplemented edition. The revision has taken into account recent developments in textbook production and textbook research: the rapidly growing market for electronic instructional media, the

differentiation and regionalization of textbook production, and the continuing trend toward the introduction of educational standards and quality criteria. Since its first publication in 1999, the Guidebook has proven to be a useful tool for scholars, textbook authors, teachers, and curriculum developers who analyze, compare, and elaborate instructional media of social science subjects on a national and international level. The Guidebook has been translated into Albanian, Serbian, Croatian, and Turkish, among other languages. The new edition places textbook revision in the context of legal and other social measures for reconciliation in transition societies. These include trials, truth commissions, and memorial ceremonies. Of particular importance in this context are the pros and cons of different formats of textbook projects, as well as the development of bi- or multilateral history textbooks. Therefore, the methodological and pedagogical aspects of bi- or multinational projects, as well as the construction of group identities in textbooks, are given greater weight. Like its predecessor, the expanded Guidebook provides quick orientation and actionable information. It is a practical reference for all experts working in the broader field of international textbook research and revision." (Georg Eckert Institute homepage)

"This handbook is to help journalists working in war zones. There is no magic way to avoid a rocket attack or an ambush, but the tips here are based on common sense (which is too often ignored) and should help many journalists solve a lot of problems. ations and ethics charters from all over the world, including the African Charter of Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Interamerican Convention on Human Rights, the Munich Charter on journalists’ rights and duties and journalists’ codes of conduct in Mali and in the US. As well as these broad documents, we also reprint practical advice such as that which the BBC gives all its journalists before they leave on dangerous assignments. We have also added (courtesy of the French defence ministry’s office of information, DICoD) the rules for self-protection given to French soldiers facing dangerous situations (riots, snipers, kidnappings, ambushes, roadblocks) and, when these precautions fail, what to do immediately to save the wounded and injured. There have been two additions to the 2010 edition of the handbook: very specific recommendations on the role of the media in humanitarian and public health emergencies and practical advice, drafted in cooperation with the Dart Centre, for coping with post-traumatic stress."
