"The Media Landscape Analysis is Component I of the Jordan Media Assessment, a comprehensive review of the media sector in Jordan. Based on a thorough desk review of existing research on Jordan’s media scene, it focuses on the legal framework, political will and economic context that affect the work of media and journalists; provides an overview of the media landscape; and an overview of the journalism educational system. It also includes a summary review of previous, existing and planned media assistance/development programs (2009 onwards) implemented by international and national media development actors." (Page 3)
"Dynamic developments in the Jordan media landscape deserve donors’ increased attention. Several currently run media development programs are small in size and follow donors’ thematic preferences. Thematic and issue-based programs often lack the possibility to support institutional development of the local organizations and often unintentionally alter the original professional area of the organization interest to a topic/issue for which they can obtain funding. Further, there is a great disproportion between media for development (media components of wider non-media focused programs) and media development programs. While there is a need to maintain a media for development approach, whereby media serve the purpose of increased understanding of the issues tackled by broader thematic programs, there is clearly a need for more comprehensive media programs. In the case of the previous, social media and digital platforms certainly play an important role, such that the capacity of stakeholders to better develop communication strategies and the use of social media should be increased. The media development programs, on the other side, should be concerned with addressing the overall deteriorating freedom of expression environment in Jordan and the status of digital transformation within which a number of good initiatives exist and require support."
