"Disability affects families the world over. Parents are often unsure as to how best to help the child who is handicapped and yet experience has shown that much can be done to help these children at home. Local resources, once mobilised can assist families and communities to better meet the needs of children with disabilities. In 1989, the Special Education Unit of UNESCO launched a new initiative in parent and community education. The aim was to test the feasibility of producing video programmes in developing countries which could be used to inform families and communities about ways of overcoming children’s disabilities. Two consultants - Roy McConkey (Scotland) and Sally Allan (Zimbabwe) - worked alongside partner agencies in Uganda, Malawi and Sri Lanka. This Manual outlines the rationale behind the project and how it was carried out. The training packages produced in the three countries are described along with details of their use. Information is also given about other video-based packages and training resources designed for use in developing countries. Practical details are provided on the organisation of local courses and in the use of video-equipment. A final section examines the steps involved in devising training inputs." (Introduction)
