Chapters 3, 5, 7 and 9 provide conceptual tools for navigating the social innovation media field: Chapter 3 discusses the origin and meaning of social innovation, including the growin interest in the contribution of digital media and technologies. Chapter 5 maps social innovation media onto evolving cultural policy discourses. We also attempt to measure the size of the social innovation media field in one country (Australia) to illustrate the difficulties in defining the field through data. Chapter 7 examines the social innovation media workforce and the motivations that underpin it. Through a qualitative analysis of youth media programmes in the United States and Australia, we show how idealistic and pragmatic motivations, as well as social interactions and cooperative mechanisms propel these media projects. We look at the importance of context specific approaches (across qualitative and quantitative methods), the role of evaluation as a learning and feedback mechanism for organizations, as well as issues of scale and replicability. As these disciplines were configuring into fields of thought and practice during the second half of the twentieth century, these currents were both fed and challenged by Freire’s understanding of praxis. Freirean-based participatory action research became the basis of what we know today as participatory development communication (PDC), which ended up becoming, toward the end of the 1980s, a common ground between development communication and communication for social change. However, as PDC evolved, its practice was still – and is still – challenged by Freirean concepts. Currently, the field of Communication for Development and Social Change needs to continue reaching out to Freire’s teachings, particularly to his epistemological and ontological framework based on his Pedagogy of the Oppressed." Another objective is to demonstrate how ethnography can provide in-depth analyses of trajectories and initiatives in CFSC. The article primarily focuses on retrospective accounts of young adults who had participated in media-educational projects by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and subsequently became active agents of change in, through and about media. The analysis of these accounts indicates how the participation in NGO projects characterize actions for self-development. It also demonstrates how interactions among participants–not necessarily anticipated by NGOs –are crucial for low-income youth to engage in activist media and journalism in peripheral Rio de Janeiro. The article ends with a reflection about how ethnography is a useful method to add in-depth qualitative layers to the evaluation of CFSC initiatives." (Abstract)
