"Between 2015 and 2017, the Internet Research Agency (IRA) – a Kremlin-backed “troll farm” based in St. Petersburg – executed a propaganda campaign on Twitter to target US voters. Scholarship has expended relatively little effort to study the role of Islamophobia in the IRA’s propaganda ca

mpaign. Following critical disinformation research, this article demonstrates that Islamophobia, affect, and white identity played a crucial role in the IRA’s targeting of rightwing US voters. With an official release of tweets and associated visual content from Twitter, we use topic modeling and visual analysis to explore both how, and to what extent, the IRA used Islamophobia in its propaganda. To do so, we develop a multimodal distant reading technique to study how the IRA aligned users with contemporary far right social movements by deploying racial and emotional appeals that center on narrating a transnational white identity under threat from Islam and Muslims." tive theoretical and methodological approaches to dissect enduring and emerging ethical questions during the pandemic, providing lucid accounts of axiological dimensions in pandemic discourses, ethics of emotional mood, ethical challenges and dilemmas in news reporting, propaganda, misinformation, disinformation, and Othering. While the case studies in this book are unique, the authors have extrapolated common strands from their analysis of ethical issues applicable to any other country or region during the pandemic, contributing unique perspectives on how media ethics are circumscribed by global health pandemics." e es zu Islam und Muslimen in Deutschland gibt. But what images of ethnic and religious minorities are propagated by newspapers, television, radio, and the Internet? What effects do these media representations have on

their audience? Media and Minorities, an interdisciplinary edited book arising from a conference hosted by the Academy of the Jewish Museum Berlin in cooperation with the Council on Migration, presents recent results of empirical studies from an international perspective and discusses them in light of the following questions: How have media representations of ethnic and religious minorities evolved in Germany and other multi-ethnic societies such as the United States, Canada, and the UK? Does a greater share of minorities in media production automatically lead to a more balanced treatment of these topics? And finally, what strategies are necessary to ensure nuanced reporting in pluralistic societies and to encourage ethnic and religious diversity in media establishments? The discussions also consider shifting requirements for appropriate and sensitive use of language." (Publisher description)
