Todos defienden una fe: “¡Viva el YOpitalismo!”. Y esto ha llevado a que el sentido común sea que los políticos, los progres y la democracia son el enemigo. El resultado es que habitamos un momento político tóxico, indignación, polarización, donde triunfan los yo celebrities de hombres muy arrogantes (Milei, Bukele, Trump, Musk…) que no son el pueblo, que son especiales y únicos, superhéroes que guían al pueblo y lo convierten en hordas de fans y seguidores; que juegan muy bien en las redes digitales y en la coolture, esa cultura del pasarla bien, en modo fluido, habitando la euforia del consumo. Su éxito está en que producen espectáculo y emociones para la gente (a la que desprecian) y los periodistas (a quienes odian), pero gente y periodistas los aman e idolatran. Su discurso es hiperpersonalizado, violento, polémico, popularizante, tribalista. Por eso, creemos que si no los explicamos como “personajes” narrativos y sujetos estéticos no podremos hacer sentido de sus prácticas, no sabremos cómo debemos luchar contra sus egos y performances. Este libro nace de este argumento, mas que desde las razones y argumentos modernos, a estos “personajes” hay que entrarles en la lucha comunicativa y cultural desde lo narrativo y estético. Y eso es así porque la política, lo cultural y la democracia no tienen que ver con “realidades” o “hechos” o “razones”, sino con percepciones, emociones y sentido comunes. Para dar de cómo es que operan estas narrativas del poder en América Latina y Caribe les presentamos un mapa con algunos de los casos más resonantes de la región -claro que no son los únicos, sin embargo “para muestra sobra un botón”-. En la primera parte encontramos los textos que dan cuenta de narrativas presidenciales -actuales y recientes, a elección de las/os autores de cada país-; luego, encontramos el análisis de narrativas que se corresponden con voces influyentes (tanto o más que las gobernantes) como son las de la justicia, la legislatura, organizaciones populares o candidatos; y finalmente encontramos un apartado que da cuenta de narrativas superpoderosas: las tecnológicas, las feministas, las indígenas, los movilizaciones sociales que se cuelan en todos las demás prácticas y discursos de la comunicación política contemporánea." This is quite a transformation when one considers that for most of recent history the ability to disseminate stories was in the hands of those who controlled the means of story production—publishers, radio stations, and music, television, and movie companies. Now, with widespread digital access, anyone can, at least theoretically, become their own publisher, their own media company, their own distribution center. The locus of creativity and production does not have to be a Hollywood lot or a music studio—it can be, as illustrated herein, a community center, kitchen table, shelter, clinic, library, or school. The democratization of the production process means access to and participation in a much larger civic space. The purpose of Digital Storytelling exemplified in this collection of case studies and examples is not propagandistic or about spreading misinformation and distrust that nefariously aim to destabilize and even undermine societies. Nor is it about somehow imitating human storytelling by using artificial intelligence to entertain and intrigue audiences. Rather it is about encouraging people to tell their story and thus participate in the civic life of their community, group, nation, and the world. It is about their active, vital role in contributing to a larger good that they may enhance, enlarge, or elucidate by fashioning their experiences and lessons into a receivable format. As is apparent throughout the volume’s project descriptions and free-flowing conversations, Digital Storytelling is young enough that it retains an emergent quality characteristic of a growing form of cultural creativity and expression. Given that digital media will be with us for a long time, one would expect Digital Storytelling to branch out in an increasing diversity of ways, forms, and contexts. And as it grows and diversifies, one would expect its challenges—matters of storyteller privacy and discretion, thresholds of individual and community participation in securing resources and facilities, the underpreparation of participants and the overfacilitation of guides and mentors, limits of copyright and the fair use of digital components, the ethics of dissemination and reactions to reception—to also be addressed in a variety of ways." Effect of Short, Animated Video Storytelling on Maternal Knowledge and Satisfaction in the Perinatal Period in South Africa: Randomized Controlled Trial

Short, animated storytelling (SAS) is an innovative, emerging approach to mHealth messaging. Objective: We aimed to measure the effect of SAS videos on maternal knowledge and user satisfaction for mothers enrolled in antenatal care programs at 2 public health facilities in the Tshwane District of South Africa. Methods: We used a randomized controlled trial with a nested evaluation of user satisfaction. Participants were randomized 1:1 into Standard-of-Care (SOC) Control, and SAS Intervention groups. The intervention videos were delivered through WhatsApp, and 1 month later, participants responded to telephone surveys assessing their knowledge. The intervention group then participated in a nested evaluation of user satisfaction [...] Conclusions: While the SAS videos resulted in high user satisfaction, measured knowledge gains were small within a participant population that was already receiving perinatal health messages through antenatal clinics. The higher knowledge scores observed in older participants with higher education levels suggest that boosting maternal knowledge in younger mothers with lower education levels should continue to be a public health priority in South Africa. Given the high maternal satisfaction among the SAS video-users in this study, policy makers should consider integrating similar approaches into existing, broad-reaching perinatal health programs, such as MomConnect, to boost satisfaction and potentially enhance maternal engagement. While previous studies have shown the promise of animated video health education, most of this research has been conducted in high-income countries. More research in underresourced settings is urgently needed, especially as access to mobile technology increases in the Global South. Future studies should explore the effect of SAS videos on maternal knowledge in hard-to-reach populations with limited access to antenatal care, although real-world logistical challenges persist when implementing studies in underresourced South African populations." "MEDIA LOVES TECH is the name and the idea behind this project that got underway in 2018. The goal is to bring together two worlds that are often too far apart: journalism and the startup community. Together with Al Khatt, a local project partner and non-governmental media organization, we wanted to ... scout, promote, develop and test innovations for the media sector. That same year, a legal support framework for startups in Tunisia came into effect, structured around a label of merit and benefits for entrepreneurs, investors and startups. Just like MEDIA LOVES TECH, it aims to support development through bold entrepreneurial spirit and innovative ideas. Since its launch, the annual MEDIA LOVES TECH incubation program, financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), supports eight to twelve startups. Implemented almost entirely online, and originally as a three-day mentor-supported hackathon, it has grown to become an incubation cycle that lasts three months. It promotes all phases of a startup — from the original idea to market entry. It has been five years since the program was started and it is still going strong. This publication is an initial assessment. Does the belief that progress comes from promoting innovation hold true? Can promoting new media projects with viable business models succeed in an unstable economic or political environment? One needs to look at various aspects to find answers. It is often said that over 90 percent of startups go under in the first two years. Still, startups are often seen as a forerunner to economic development and as having a stimulating effect on the overall economy. Even if initiatives do flop, their traces can still be found in the ecosystem. When assessing the MEDIA LOVES TECH program, it is worth reflecting on what has been achieved and gaining insights for the future. Five projects are presented here. Our team has taken an in-depth look at the projects’ stories and progress and includes key performance indicators. Measuring impact in an unsteady startup environment can be a challenge, and our success stories address this.
