"Listening to the World — 100 Years of Radio Art takes the 100 year anniversary of Radio Art in Germany as an opportunity to inquire radio and listening as global phenomena with visible and invisible worldwide connections. On 19 October 2024, the multiformat programme presents perspectives and pra

ctices from Southern Africa and other geographically, politically, and sonically related areas. In the process of studying the role of radio broadcasting in Southern Africa one is invited to ask existential questions, such as: What can radio broadcasting provide today? How can the medium be used to intervene artistically? And in which areas and from which perspective? Through these questions, attention shifts towards mechanisms of different knowledge production systems that shape and define the interpretations of radio both as technology and cultural entity. In many people’s experience, acts of listening are intertwined with acts of remembering: sound can function as a form of memory. In the aforementioned regions, this manifests as creative rituals that carry a plethora of subjective and political meaning. This programme considers these acts of listening as operating from and within a background of colonial trauma. How can radio both as technology and cultural medium facilitate a reappraisal and amplify its healing effect? The encounters focussing on these questions are hosted in a 12-hour live radiophonic exchange involving communities and radio stations in Cape Town, Harare, and Berlin. This live platform, broadcasted in and from HKW via the experimental radio station Cashmere Radio in Berlin, provides a chance to test collective commitments on listening towards global justice, addressing colonially fractured practices of listening." "With 2533 titles, this bibliography is probably the most comprehensive on the use of mass media in developing countries. The volume, compiled by the ‘Centre International de Documentation Economique et Sociale Africaine’, Brussels, is not limited to Africa, but includes publications on all deve

loping countries, which are broken down again in the geographical index. Each of the 2533 titles is also accompanied by a brief summary in French and English, which provides further details on the content of the referenced title. Book and journal publications from the years 1950 to 1969 are included, whereby the period between 1950 and 1960 is only partially covered, according to the authors. The actual annotated bibliography is preceded by an analytical plan which, in no less than 14 pages, attempts to cover the entire field of journalism in developing countries, from theory to press, radio, film, television and audiovisual media. At the same time, according to this plan, the relevant numbers of the titles published in the bibliography are given on pages 15 to 36, making it much easier to work through the topics. The analytical plan, like the entire work, is written in French and English, whereby the original working language was French - which is made clear in various places by obvious ‘translations’. In addition to publications from the French and English language areas, titles from the Dutch, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese language areas are also included. It is clear that with the use of so many languages, some printing errors creep into titles and bibliographical details, although these do not necessarily prevent the original from being found. In the introduction to this extensive work, it is specifically pointed out that no claim is made to completeness, which could hardly be achieved with publications from the non-English and non-French language areas in particular. Nevertheless, this is probably the most comprehensive bibliography on the subject to date." (Review by Franz-Josef Eilers in: Communicatio Socialis, vol. 6, 1973, no. 1, page 88)

have a profound global influence. If it tends to be outshone in the Global North by the more recent innovations of television and digital media, in the South radio continues to have a dominant presence, particularly in Africa where it retains its status as the most popular mass medium. A recent continental survey of news audiences by Afrobarometer suggested that 68% of Africans source their news from the radio on a daily or weekly basis, while only 53% get their news from the television and 37% from internet sources (Malophane 2022). Nor is the dominance of radio limited to countries that have low rates of internet access. Another recent survey found that 80% of South Africans listen to the radio at least once a week in a country where digital media attract their largest African audiences (Bosch 2022)." (Abstract)

The various contributors to this book demonstrate that whilst print and television media often serve elite interests and audiences, the low cost and flexibility of radio has helped it to create a ‘common’ space for national dialogue and deliberation. The book also investigates the ways in which digital technologies have enhanced the consumption of radio and produced a sense of imagined community for citizens, including those in marginalised communities and rural areas." ulier, la parole traditionnelle a laissé le pas à la parole de la radio, de la télévision et des réseaux sociaux.

ublic discourse and impact citizens' perceptions of reality. Broadcasting Democracy: Radio and Identity in South Africa provides an exciting look into the diverse world of South African radio, exploring how various radio formats and stations play a role in constructing post-apartheid identities. At the centre of the book is the argument that various types of radio stations represent autonomous systems of cultural activity, and are 'consumed' as such by listeners. In this sense, it argues that South African radio is 'broadcasting democracy." (Back cover)

o programming of international broadcasters, and led to fundamental changes in the way radio and audio programmes are produced and distributed. Major western broadcasters, such as BBC World Service, BBG, RFI and DW, have limited their shortwave services to a small selection of countries, mainly in Africa and parts of Asia, where the infrastructure does not offer real alternatives for addressing the respective target groups. In these regions, radio still plays a vital role, not only for reasons related to infrastructure, but also because a great number of illiterate listeners can access information, knowledge and education best via audio. Traditional radio production and terrestrial transmission are also useful and efficient tools in media development work, as they can reach out into remote or rural areas and empower people to strengthen their community and cultural identity. But radio’s relevance goes beyond the local needs of regions that have not kept pace with the rate of recent technological change and media innovation. Radio has been at the core of international broadcasting right from the start, and now that it has become one element in a new mix of media, it turns out that there are some attractive core qualities of radio and audio that remain. These qualities are: 1. the direct and emotional impact of the human voice, 2. radio’s well-established culture of dialogue, 3. its potential to involve listeners as coproducers, 4. the flexibility, mobility and comparatively low production costs of audio, 5. its ability to subvert censorship."
