"The traditional financial models for news are dying. Could churches, environmental movements, and open source communities hold clues to its survival? We’re at a moment of profound transition and successive crisis for news. Our mission is to explore how membership models might help. A key takeaway
...
from our research over the past 12 months is that membership models are fundamentally different from subscription or product models–and that they require whole new methods and mindsets to be successful. Membership isn’t just “subscription by another name” (though it’s often referenced that way), or about giving consumers access to a product. It’s participation in a larger cause that reflects what they want to see in civil society. In membership, there’s a different “social contract” or “value proposition” between the site and its members. At the basic level of: What do you give? What do you get? Subscribers pay their money and get access to a product. But members join the cause and participate because they believe in it." (Executive summary)

"The paper seeks to identify the factors that motivate a person who champions ICT4D initiatives. Given the important contributions of ICT4D champions to initiative success, better understanding of their motivations holds the potential to identify, develop and deploy such individuals more effectively

, harnessing their potential positive contributions to ICT4D initiative success. A multiple case study strategy is used to explore the motivational factors of three successful ICT4D champions in the South African context. The Work Preference Inventory (WPI) of personal motivations was used to design in-depth interviews with the champions and semistructured interviews with 29 other stakeholders. It found ICT4D champions are motivated by the need for personal actualization, business success and to address social concerns – origins of these motives could be traced to various internal and environmental stimuli. Practical implications drawn from the research are that profiling of stakeholder motivations in an ICT4D initiative is feasible and that organizations can use such information to create a conducive environment for grooming and empower new and existing champions to function more effectively. This first investigation of ICT4D champion motivations shows its importance and the potential thereof towards improving initiative success and emphasizes the need for further research of this nature." "The purposes of the present study are: (1) to examine the nature of the modernization process among peasants in one less developed country, Colombia, and (2) to determine the cross-cultural validity of these findings in other of the less developed nations. Peasants are important subjects of study b

y social scientists because they constitute a majority of the population of most less developed nations. In this book modernization is viewed as essentially a communication process; modernizing message must reach the peasant via such communication channels as the mass media, change agents, or the villager's trips to cities. The methodological approach to theory construction in the present work is middle-range analysis. Data were gathered from peasants in six Colombian villages varying in degree of modernization; comparable data-gathering procedures and measures were used in two studies in India and one in Kenya in order to provide cross-cultural tests of generalization. Functional literacy was measured among the Colombian peasants by asking each respondent to read a six-word sentence in Spanish. Highly positive relationships were obtained between functional literacy scores and (1) self-defined literacy, and (2) years of formal education. These findings have been confirmed with data from a sample of 702 Indian peasants, whose responses lend cross-cultural credence to the conclusions." (ERIC databse)
