The young journalists were able to produce quality radio programming which was very positively received by the communities, as 90 percent of surveyed community members found that the radio programs produced by the young journalists as part of the project bring an added value on critical social and political issues. This is a significant improvement from the baseline (35,7 percent in South Sudan, 16,7 percent in CAR and 76,2 percent in Mali), thus indicating the program’s success in changing perceptions regarding the value of youth’s perspectives. Nonetheless, both the audience and project staff identified avenues for improving the reach of the radio programs, including exploring other media, and increasing communication around the program and broadcast times. Beyond enabling youth journalists to produce high-quality radio programs, the project also benefits them by fostering motivation, entrepreneurialism, agency and success as the evaluation found evidence of youth journalists creating their own initiatives, and acting as mediators in conflicts between friends or in their family. In addition, amongst youth from the community who participated in project activities, the project led to increased awareness of their role and capacities as change agents." (Key findings, page 6)

For Citizens’ Voice, the assumption is that by accessing pluralistic information and engaging in dialogue with people with other backgrounds and perspectives, young people are aware of different viewpoints, accept and respect diversity, challenge restrictive norms and participate in society. For Love Matters, it relates to providing evidence-based and pleasure-positive SRHR information that helps people to make informed decisions in their personal lives. To investigate whether this assumption holds true for both programmes, a dedicated survey question was included in the surveys of platform users conducted as part of the Next Generation Mid-Term Review (MTR) evaluation conducted by external researchers in 2019. This open question asked users whether they could give an example of a change they had experienced through engaging with the platform. The answers and examples given by users have been analysed by the PMEL team to answer the main research question: To what extent do returning users experience a change in knowledge, attitude or behaviour as a result of engaging with the platform?" With a total number of 18,000 schools across Indonesia, pesantren are the oldest basis of Islamic education in the country and highly influential in spreading tolerance and peace. Through the production of radio and short films by pesantren students or santri, SFCG Indonesia sought to encourage male and female pesantren leaders, teachers and students to be critical in dealing with problems of intolerance and radicalism, while also disseminating the values of tolerance and peace in their communities. The stories documented in this book serve as a future reference of the project’s successes. The book records the significant changes experienced by the santri and their teachers, when these changes occurred and the important lessons learned from this project. Out of the ten pesantren that participated in the project, SFCG selected five pesantren to provide stories that illustrate the changes mentioned above. To assess the extent to which the Youth Voice and the Light of the Region have achieved their objectives and to make further necessary improvements to the programs, this qualitative audience evaluation was conducted using eight Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) in the Provincial City of Battambang and Moung District of Battambang Province. That is, they create an environment whereby young people are involved in every step of the process from planning to production to evaluation. The main challenges ahead facing "genuine and effective" participation in the media are: getting adults to "let go", creating an environment at school, home and in the community where young people's participation in the media is encouraged and taken seriously and generating enough funds for a sustainable and successful projects.
