"Using a randomized encouragement design, we assigned 2,064 people to listen to either 'Ina Mafita' or to a control program (professional soccer matches) each week over the course of two months. Recruitment and engagement were conducted remotely via short message service (short message system [SMS]
...
or text message). The results indicate that the radio show 'Ina Mafita' had a positive effect on listeners’ beliefs about the importance of being a role model and a positive but not significant effect on the belief in local committees’ value in reintegrating at-risk youth. Results were more pronounced for high complier subsample and for those who reported liking the show’s story line. The authors found no effect on listeners’ views of kidnap victims. The researchers found no or possibly negative effects on listeners’ value of diversity, however, it must be noted that the show did not explicitly address this theme. Listeners also enjoyed the show and many continued to listen to the show after the incentivized exposure had concluded." (Key findings)

"These guidelines are published under the Going Digital series where we explore and share our learning in using new digital technologies in evaluation and research. In this fifth instalment of Going Digital, another form of digital data is explored: web data. The paper discusses how web data, in par

"This guide is designed for anyone who wants to learn how communication can more effectively support evaluation: evaluation consultants, communication consultants, evaluation commissioners and programme/project staff participating in evaluations. The guide is structured around three broad phases of
...
the evaluation process: before, during and after. The guide aims to provide advice and practical hints on how to use communication for each of these phases. A communication plan of action template adapted for evaluation is provided at annex 1. Examples of innovative communication tools for evaluation are found at annex 2. A case study is included at annex 3 that can be used for learning purposes. Links to extra resources are found at annex 4. The guide explains how to use communication to support evaluation and readers can adapt and use these approaches depending upon the stage of the evaluation process, their own context and available resources." "Between 2008 and 2011, CommunityBased Adaptation in Africa (CBAA) – an action research project – tested tools for community adaptation and knowledge generation in eight African countries while building the capacity of its partners and local communities. Through participatory methods, the proj

ect helped the selected communities to adapt to climate change and share lessons learnt with key stakeholders at local, national, regional and international levels. The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) invited InsightShare to pilot participatory video for monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of this project to support their internal learning processes, inform the action research, and amplify community voices in relation to local adaptation to climate change. Between 2009 and 2010, InsightShare held workshops in four of the eight participating countries: Malawi, South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe. InsightShare passed on skills in participatory video and monitoring and evaluation to build the capacities of community members and staff from the communitybased organisations (CBOs) and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) implementing CBAA in each country. This enhanced the partners capacity to listen to the community members in their search for local adaptation strategies, and to monitor their pilot projects and climaterelated indicators."
