Communication for Development and Social Change: New Millenium

"We can draw several conclusions from this review about both theory and practice in the context of this decade of the Millennium Development Goals. First, the field of C4D remains alive and thriving on the ground, but it has not gained or maintained the center of attention in the larger communicatio ... n field for some years in its mainstream journals. Much of the work to collect data and even to summarize those data has shifted to those organizations that promote practice or who collect information online. Websites of these organization may serve as better sources for data and writing about C4D than academic books or journals. It is not that there are not a number of academic institutions pursuing theory and policy studies concerning C4D (the Communication Initiative lists a large number globally), but other specialties like health, education, agronomy, policy studies, etc. have sometimes absorbed these pursuits; on the other hand communication studies have renamed their fields even though they pursue some of the same issues as before. Also, we should encourage a renewal of a more direct pursuit of C4D studies within the communication field, especially as this derives from universities close to a set of local issues (the University of the Philippines at Los Baños has provided an example of application and theory in the rural context for many decades). Second, I placed this review in the context of the Millennium Development Goals because these goals manifest the global expression of conscience for all countries. If C4D will again play a practical role in the process of solving the urgent problems of poverty, health, children, women, and the inequities that underlie these issues, then academics need to help create the theories and policies that can help eradicate the problems in both the short and long term (2015 for the MDGs). I premise this belief on the fact that people in every society live in an increasingly connected world where communication is an important reality and the study of communication is critical. This study of communication needs to look at the most urgent problems facing societies and ask how communication can help in their solution. Zur ambivalenten Rolle von Religion in afrikanischen Gewaltkonflikten

Mittels der Analyse von vier Variablenclustern, nämlich a) konfliktspezifischen Merkmalen (wie Dauer, Intensität, Konfliktprävalenz), b) klassischen risk factors (wie Armut, ethnische Zersplitterung, vorherige Konflikte), c) religionsdemographischen Merkmalen (wie Anteile und Polarisierungsgrad von Gruppen) und d) Variablen, welche die Rolle von Religion in Gewaltkonflikten beschreiben (wie religiös motivierte Gewalt- oder Friedensaufrufe/Friedensinitiativen, Überlappung von religiösen Identitäten mit Konfliktlinien, Verbindungen von Konfliktparteien und religiösen Organisationen) wurden qualitative fact sheets für 28 Konfliktfälle erstellt und in einer Datenbank erfasst, um sie auch für Korrelationsanalysen und makroqualitative Vergleichsverfahren analysefähig zu machen. Auf der deskriptiven Ebene bestätigen die Datenbankanalysen eindrucksvoll die Ambivalenz religiöser Faktoren in Gewaltkonflikten: In 19 von 28 Fällen konnten eskalierende und deeskalierende Elemente entdeckt werden, in sechs weiteren Fällen ausschließlich Deeskalation. Religion spielt damit in insgesamt 25 der 28 Fälle und damit weitaus häufiger eine Rolle als gemeinhin angenommen, auch wenn theologische Inhalte bzw. Ideen in maximal acht Fällen als Teilursachen in Betracht kommen (v.a. Sudan, Nordnigeria und Somalia). Bivariate Analysen und makroqualitative Vergleiche zeigen, dass zahlreiche religiöse Variablen einen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Konfliktwahrscheinlichkeit nach 1990 bzw. auf das Andauern des Konflikts haben (bei der Konfliktintensität sind die Ergebnisse nicht robust und für die Konfliktdauer gibt es keine Zusammenhänge). Die Überlappung religiöser und anderer Identitäten erweist sich als ähnlich einflussreich und signifikant wie Verbindungen von religiösen Organisationen und Konfliktparteien sowie der eskalierende Gebrauch religiöser Ideen durch religiöse und politische Führer (v.a. Gewaltaufrufe). Obwohl Friedensaufrufe und -initiativen häufiger beobachtbar sind, kann für sie – ebenso wie für die Existenz interreligiöser Netzwerke – kein positiver Einfluss auf Frieden festgestellt werden. Nicht-religiöse Risikofaktoren ergeben dagegen starke Zusammenhänge (v.a. Einkommen, vorheriger Konflikt, ethnische Fragmentierung), die insgesamt etwas stärker sind als die Korrelationen mit religiösen Faktoren. Unterstützung gibt es schließlich für eine „Mobilisierungsthese“: Makroqualitative Vergleiche zeigen, dass religiös begründete Gewaltaufrufe besonders dann wahrscheinlich sind, wenn religiöse mit anderen sozialen Identitäten und den Konfliktlinien parallel verlaufen und Beziehungen zwischen den Konfliktparteien und religiösen Organisationen bestehen." "Darüber können viele, die in der Bildungsarbeit der Akademien versuchen, mit allgemeinem Publikum über Themen ins Gespräch zu kommen, die tabuisiert, traumatisiert, intimisiert oder sonstwie blockiert sind, berichten: Setzt man Filme als Katalysatoren des Gesprächs ein, wird es vielen möglich ... , über Dinge zu sprechen, die ihnen sonst unzugänglich sind. Und sie können anders darüber sprechen, als ermögliche der Film eine Spiegelung und dadurch eine Abmilderung der eigenen Behinderungen im Umgang mit einem Thema. Dass Psychiater sich dieser eigentümlichen Fähigkeit des Films versichert haben, sie zu therapeutischen Zwecken ausnutzen, nimmt nicht wunder. Zwar ist die Film- oder Cinetherapie erst seit wenigen Jahren auch Thema theoretischer Reflexion, doch spielt Film im therapeutischen Prozeß schon lange eine gewichtige Rolle. Film and andere Künste, müßte man ergänzen, weil gewisse Spielformen der narrativen Therapie, die Bibliotherapie und die Kunsttherapie sehr viel längere Traditionen auch theoretischer Reflexion kennt, manchmal zur Grundlage ganzer Therapieformen geworden ist. Filmtherapie ist auch für den Filmwissenschaftler von höchstem Interesse, zeigt sich doch hier Aneignung von Filmen an einer signifikanten Grenze. Ist es Aufgabe einer Rezeptionstheorie oder -ästhetik des Films, die formalen Vorgaben, die ein Film als materiale und symbolische Vorgabe des Rezeptionsprozesses macht, in Beziehungen zu bringen mit den allgemeinen Bestimmungen, denen das Verhalten des Zuschauers unterworfen ist (ihn zu „positionieren“, die „Zuschauerrolle“ als textuell-dominierte Rolle zu skizzieren oder ähnlich), so ist das individuell-empirische Urteil eines Zuschauers, die sozialen oder biographischen Bezüge, die er dazu aktiviert, gerade nicht Aufgabe der Filmtheorie. Filme eröffnen Potentiale von Bedeutungen, sind anschließbar an diverse Rezeptionshorizonte, die ihrerseits wieder signifikant sein können (als klassenspezifische readings etwa, als Dekodierungen, die auf Distanz zu den angebotenen Deutungsmustern gehen - die Cultural Studies handelt zentral von solchen Differenzierungen -, oder als Differenzierungen der Zuschauer hinsichtlich ihrer „cineastischen“ Orientierungen und Vorlieben). All dieses ist aber ebenfalls nicht vom einzelnen abhängig. Für die Therapie dagegen steht nun aber das Besondere des jeweiligen Patienten im Zentrum, das Besondere seiner Auslegungen, Impressionen, Assoziationen, Urteile, das Besondere auch in Form des Nicht-Wahrnehmens, des Vergessens und Übersehens. Darum markiert das psychotherapeutische Projekt der Cinetherapie eine höchst interessante Grenze der filmischen Arbeit an Strukturen des filmischen Textes, die das Ausgangsmaterial je indivdueller und zumindest zum Teil subjektiver Aneignungen bilden. Darum auch ist eine Kasusistik eine der ersten und allgemeinsten Teildisziplinen der Cinetherapie. Dass Prozesse der Übertragung hier ebenso große Bedeutung einnehmen wie Prozesse der in allgemeiner Therapie, und dass es opportun ist, Strategien der Verdrängung, Sublimierung, Blockierung etc. beim Umgang mit filmischen Materialien anzunehmen, wie sie im Umgang mit primärere Erfahrung auch verfolgt werden, erscheint insgesamt evident zu sein."
