y). "This is a ‘cookbook’ full of ingredients to design and implement youth-led accountability initiatives. The content is based on research, evidence and learning documented on a programme called the Development Alternative, a consortium of youth and international development organisations that cam

e together to strengthen young people’s voice and agency in development. We have tried to boil down what we have learnt about the key ingredients for youth-led accountability - youth leadership, transparency and access to information, community awareness and engagement, mechanisms to gather and listen to feedback, trust and collaboration with development actors, and supporting development partners to respond to feedback - and how these ingredients can be combined into a programme. We also reflect on ‘the model for change’, our own model for youth-led accountability implemented as part of the Development Alternative." (Back cover)

lains why Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) is the key to improve transparency, accountability, accessibility, and effectiveness of public digital service. It enables readers to establish Public Money? Public Code! as the mindset of perceiving public digital service: If a public digital service is built by using tax payers’ money, it should be supervised and examined by them as all public infrastructure. Finally, the Guide also provides practical policy recommendations on enhancing the use of FLOSS in governments." (Publisher description)

"Citizen monitoring, social audits, mobile-based feedback systems, procurement monitoring: These are just a few examples of so-called citizen-centred accountability (CCA) mechanisms which governments and civil society organisations have developed to encourage citizens to feedback on the services the

y are entitled to and ultimately hold them to account. As one organisation active in this field, Integrity Action has a particular interest in learning more about how these kinds of CCA systems can be designed so that they have the greatest chance of being sustained. In order to address this question, we carried out a comprehensive literature scan, 25 semi-structured interviews with experts and practitioners from civil society and government and an online snap survey with 70 respondents. This report shares what we discovered through that learning journey." (Executive summary)

The majority of the contributors were from the Global South. We combined this with a literature review covering around 200 shortlisted research, policy and evaluation reports from a variety of fields. We were not only asking how citizen-centred accountability (CCA) mechanisms can be made to last, but also asking more broadly whether and when sustainability should be pursued, and what sustainability looks like in social accountability. In addition, we explored particular issues of relevance to sustained impact, including incentives for key stakeholders, the importance (or otherwise) of independence from the service provider, the use of technology, and inclusion. The purpose of this note is to begin to break down and make sense of some of the different perspectives on sustainability we have encountered though these discussions, as the first of a number of contributions on the topic over the coming months. Together, these contributions aim to offer a range of insights for different stakeholders: for donors thinking about long term funding horizons and different models they might want to support; for practitioners thinking about the kinds of questions to consider when designing CCA programmes and mechanisms; and for academics and experts, as a modest contribution to our collective understanding of the value of CCA more generally."

The majority of interviewees wanted information about financial resources and the channels they flowed through, and all respondents wanted information on the services provided and where the work was happening subnationally, suggesting that these two sets of information may be the most important. Unfortunately, information on subnational locations and services provided is infrequently available through open aid data portals, implying a need to update what aid information is shared." (Page 1)

rged in response, suggesting that oppositional narratives have played only a minor role in public sphere debates. Fundamentally, philanthrocapitalists have recognized the key role that advocacy plays in setting the agenda of media, policymakers, and the public, cultivating a number of powerful tools to ensure that the stones that get the most attention are those that reflect their own priorities and strategies for humanitarian action. Indeed, at a time when approximately 63 percent of Americans get their news from Facebook, the philanthrocapitalist agenda of the newly created Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative might have the best media platform yet to shape and measure the perspectives of the public. Looking forward, it seems that some balance is needed between recognizing the good work that these philanthrocapitalists can achieve, on one hand, while having opportunities to hold them accountable and propose alternative solutions, on the other." They explore options for activism by youth and musicians online, as well as the art of using visual evidence to expose delusions of power. By focusing on individual cases or stories of corruption, the country reports take a practical look at the role of the internet in combating corruption at all levels." (Back cover)
