"This article analyzes how patronage crowdfunding is becoming a central part of the model for building a radio station. Implementing this model requires mobilizing listeners to engage in the direct, long-term financial support of a station. The analysis conducted in this article is based on a case s

tudy of Radio 357—an Internet radio station in Poland funded through digital patronage since 2020. The success of this station suggests that the development of crowdfunding has created a space for new types of participatory engagement by audiences. Not only are we experiencing a reduction in the distance between presenters and listeners alongside increased connectivity between members of the audience but we are also seeing the intervention of patrons in shaping the station in terms of how, what, and when it broadcasts." radio comunitaria perdure y desarrolle sus objetivos (sostenibilidad político-social, comunicacional, económica-administrativa). A partir de allí nos concentraremos en pensar específicamente el aspecto económico para tener herramientas para analizar cómo abordamos estos temas en nuestra emisora y qué podemos hacer para fortalecernos, obtener más recursos, hacer una gestión prolija. Siempre entendiendo que las radios comunitarias se sostienen con diversas y múltiples fuentes de financiamiento y que también en este aspecto de la gestión es fundamental la comunidad y su participación." "Sector income has increased significantly since the last census was conducted in 2011-2012. Community radio stations collectively generated $103,533,154, including CBF grants, in the 2015-2016 financial year. This represents an increase of 41%, or $30,143,206, over the last four years. While it is

important to note that the inclusion of 57 temporary community broadcast license holders in the sample has contributed to the increase in total income generated by the sector, as these stations reported significantly lower average income per station than permanent community broadcast license holders the effect is not significant. Income growth was strongest across regional and metropolitan stations, with these stations reporting total income 84% and 47% higher than four years ago respectively. Rural stations also grew, while suburban stations reported income lower than in 2011-2012. Youth stations experienced the most significant growth since the last Census, with income growing by 125% between 2011-2012 and 2015-2016. Significant increases in total income were also reported by religious stations, who reported income 82% higher than in 2011-2012." (Page 8)

is a detailed and comprehensive practical guide to the different elements of managing commercial and community radio. It provides useful tools and examples of management practice, ranging from 'station and organisational structures' and 'financial management, sales and fundraising' to 'managing news and phone-ins' and 'knowing and researching your audience'. The last part uses three case studies (a local radio, a community radio, the BBC 6 music programme) to illustrate different station structures and management approaches. The clear structure, the plain language and the illustrative examples make this guide a helpful tool for any person interested in radio management - not only in the United Kingdom, but also other parts of the world - and it may also give advice on setting up a station from scratch." "This study claims to be one of the first attempts to explore the field of radio economics in rural Africa. Based on in-depth questionnaires filled in by 15 radio stations in Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Ghana and Mali, it found that the costs vary widely according to the type of ownership, i.e. public

, commercial or community radio. The average start-up costs fluctuate between $50,000 and 100,000. The annual operating costs range between $20,000 to $540,000 for public broadcasters, $2,500 to $930,000 for commercial stations and $2,500 to $286,000 for community stations. The costs of programming are largely dependant on the level of interactivity of the programme format, the accessibility of additional resources to produce specialised programmes, and the type of station producing the programme. The study found that community stations tended to invest more resources in interactive programming with community involvement and less on in-studio formats. The sale of airtime is important revenue for most stations. There is no shortage of investment for starting up radio stations (in particular community radios), but the common challenge remains the sustainability beyond the initial investment." "While there are many trainers offering curricula in radio, this curriculum focuses on the management aspect of community radio. hen things go horribly wrong, as they so often do, there is much talk of lack of dedication and commitment. People get disillusioned and drop out. The failure in non-profit organisations often has nothing to do with a lack of commitment, and everything to do with a failure of management. Organisations need to be managed properly so that they grow and succeed. Radio station managers need to understand how organisations work, and how they develop and change. They need to manage the people and the resources, as well as the programming, to build a successful radio station. This training curriculum is aimed at building radio station managers' understanding of organisations and of the management role. While there is management training available, it tends to be aimed at commercial stations. Community radio, with its emphasis on community participation and volunteer involvement, has its own management issues. This curriculum was developed specifically for community radio stations - drawing on the experience of community radio stations in South Africa." (Introductory comments, page 1)
