ition to political democracy and broadcast voices that are otherwise unheard. The contributors to the volume are academics and practitioners from five continents, many with first-hand experience of community radio. Each chapter demonstrates the pivotal role that small radio stations can play in developing, sustaining and invigorating communities. The book charts campaigns for the legalisation of community radio and relates them to a theoretical context, while providing illustrations and examples from community radio stations around the world." is a detailed and comprehensive practical guide to the different elements of managing commercial and community radio. It provides useful tools and examples of management practice, ranging from 'station and organisational structures' and 'financial management, sales and fundraising' to 'managing news and phone-ins' and 'knowing and researching your audience'. The last part uses three case studies (a local radio, a community radio, the BBC 6 music programme) to illustrate different station structures and management approaches. The clear structure, the plain language and the illustrative examples make this guide a helpful tool for any person interested in radio management - not only in the United Kingdom, but also other parts of the world - and it may also give advice on setting up a station from scratch." is the paucity of theoretical and empirical studies regarding women and radio. The purpose of this article is to contribute to a theory of women's radio and its relation to practice. Employing feminist readings of Habermas' theory of the public sphere, it is possible to develop a concept of a women's or feminist public sphere in relation to women's community radio. This article discusses whether and how this is emerging through the opportunities that women have in terms of access, training and development in community radio. With empirical data from women's radio stations and projects in different parts of Europe, radio as a potential feminist public sphere is explored, and a foundation laid for a further grounding of an understanding of how alternative media can be a tool for women's empowerment."
