Functions of the Mass Media in Brazil's 1964 Crisis

Journalism Quarterly, volume 44, issue 2 (1967), pp. 297-306
"The communication media played a large part in the political conflict in Brazil which ended with the overthrow of the government of Goulart in April 1964 — Their role well illustrates how the mass media can intervene in a policy which aims to maintain the freedom of the press in a developing country — The freedom of the press can turn against the very régime which encouraged it — The same media helped to unite the army against the Brazilian government — The author criticised the use of the communication media for purposes of propaganda (e.g. the Brazilian left-wing politician Goulart and his colleagues in 1964)."
