"This document reports on the pilot assessment of 15 community radio stations – or of radios that claim to be community radios – based on the Community Radio Performance Assessment System (CR-PAS) developed by the Community Radio Support Centre (CRSC) / Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (
...
NEFEJ). The CR-PAS seeks to assess community radio stations in seven performance areas: participation and ownership, governance, programs, resource structure and management, station management, financial management and networking. It uses a set of 60 indicators and is intended to be a practical tool that the stations could eventually adopt for continuous self-assessment. Following a brief overview of radio in Nepal, this report provides an overview of the CR-PAS and the assessment process. Thereafter, it reports on the findings and analysis both of all the radios that were assessed and also of individual stations, leading to conclusions and recommendations." (Executive summary)

"This publication allows community radio stations to assess their performance regarding: community participation and ownership; radio governance structures and procedures; radio programme structure; radio station management; financial management and resource structure; as well as networking. detailed scoring system, the manual provides a comprehensive list of indicators that categorises assessed stations into four groups: evolving, progressing, performing and model community radios. It considers the issues that are at the heart of community media: public accountability, community representation, locally relevant programming, diverse funding, and due acknowledgement of staff, including volunteers. The manual is clear and concise providing a sound basis for the task it describes. Tailored to the needs of community radios in Nepal, not every single indicator may apply to stations in other countries. Nevertheless, the scoring methodology can easily be adapted to other contexts." (CAMECO Update 4-2009)

"This guidebook offers instructions for strengthening the organisation of community radio stations, in order to improve their effectiveness and efficiency. n detail. Aspects of these organisational tasks are human resource plans, resource mobilisation, fundraising, accounting, maintenance of equipment and the determination of a clear broadcasting policy. But not only advice for practical matters is given: The publication further discusses the underlying mission, vision and goals of organisations, which are viewed as not sufficiently thought through by many community radio stations, yet crucial for their survival. The guidebooks' step-by-step lists, tables and forms, in part taken from existing community radio stations like Radio Sagarmatha in Nepal, are particularly useful, as they show how theoretical and abstract manuals can be turned into practice." "This book is based on conclusion that ethics are nothing but a series of moral qualities. The first chapter, apart from tracing the history of ethics and throwing some light on the concept as such, tries to define ethics. The second chapter outlines the efforts surrounding enforcement of ethics in

Nepalese journalism apart from reviewing the implementation them. Apart from defining community radio, the third chapter deals in detail with issues related to ethics in community mass media and related areas. In the fourth chapter, since ethics is not a basic or relative law, effort has been made to point out that ethics can undergo changes with time. Fifth chapter tries to incorporate laws which are attracted in the course of information dissemination. The sixth chapter carries differing ethics rendered into Nepali. That will contribute to the task of carrying out comparative analyses. Together with this, a compilation of the ethics enforced in Nepal until now have been carried as annexures." (Foreword)

implementation of strategic planning. Many graphs and tables illustrate and facilitate the use of the different concepts, as well as the concrete example of a strategic plan in the annex. Every issue is treated quite briefly, so maybe reading this manual will not be enough to really start a strategic planning process. Nevertheless, it serves the purpose of an introduction quite well." to contribute to the social progress of their communities. Hence, this publication suggests building partnerships to support each other in various contexts, eg, by sharing programmes on topics like immunisation, which are relevant for many radio stations, or by assisting each other in finding sponsorships or advertisers. The term "collective" refers to partnerships of Nepalese community radio stations amongst each other, either on a national or a regional level, or amongst those who have something else in common, although partnerships can also be built by community radio stations and commercial radio stations. The text includes an explanation of the principles of social marketing, and considers its specific features in relation to community radio. The desired structure and the underlying principles that follow this strategy are also discussed. All in all, the publication can inspire radio activists who wish to improve the programmes and the promotion of their radio stations by building a network with others." (commbox)

"This report is one of the first studies comparing systematically different aspects of community radio practice in developing countries. Based on five country surveys - Colombia, Mali, Nepal, Peru and South Africa - it provides descriptions and analyses of: participatory processes and volunteerism;

relationship with the community; exertion of rights; accountability and good governance; community radio networks; financing and financial sustainability; and community radio in conflict and post-conflict situations. The detailed country studies show that the practice of community radio broadcasting differs widely according to the national context, the legal environment and the specific role of national community radio associations and networks. In comparing the country studies, the main report stresses good practices, e.g. regarding the role of strong national networks, as well as some challenges like the need to accompany volunteers in a more systematic way and to address the precarious financial state of many community radio stations." [...] All data on the basis of which analyses have been made are primary which have been obtained from the field. The people inhabiting the areas that are covered by Radio Palung constituted the sole source of data required to meet the research objectives laid above. The villages covered were Palung, Daman, Chitlang and Bajrabarahi from Makawanpur district. In this research, population of active age and households in the above mentioned four villages constitutes the universe. Five hundred households, which is approximately 20% of the total households, were taken as samples. From each household, one person was chosen as respondents and interviewed. It is to be noted that only the owner of households were chosen as samples, and domestic servants, hired laborers, married daughters and people living in rent were excluded."
