(Description de la maison d'édition)

f certain features, this Report makes no attempt to be exhaustive, but brings out the convergence between information technology, information and communication and their applications in the various media (written press, news agencies, radio and television) and provides statistics on the changes observed in this field. It also attempts to highlight the major problems connected with the development of new information and communication technologies, such as the regulation of networks, media attitudes to violence and access of women to the media. The question that lies at the heart of this report may be summed up as follows: how are we to reinvent our patterns of thought and knowledge in the context of the technological multimedia revolution, which is proving both profound and irreversible?" "A pilot project on Youth Protection was supported by UNICEF and implemented by the Centre for Communication, Training, Documentation, and Production of Cairo University between August 1996 and September 1997. Major objectives were to: 1) gain current and in-depth information on relevant knowledge,
...
attitudes and behaviors related to HIV/AIDS, and identify risk factors among youth as a key population group; 2) develop key prevention messages suitable for youth and similar target groups; 3) disseminate essential prevention messages among one particular youth group, namely, Cairo University students, who may further disseminate information gained; and 4) develop a model for working with university students which can be replicated in other Universities in Egypt. Implementation began with baseline data collection (through survey and focus group discussions) to assess Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) among the university student target population and identify appropriate intervention techniques and message strategies. Small groups of university students from 10 different faculties were then trained in interpersonal communications skills related to HIV/AIDS and on relevant prevention measures. Ten student rallies were organized to convey essential messages. Impact evaluation was conducted through pre/post-rally interviews with samples of 20 randomly selected students. The main findings of the study point to misconceptions and lack of essential knowledge among university students on HIV/AIDS, including means of protection from infection. Focus group discussions indicate that a significant number of Egyptian youths are engaging in high-risk behaviors. Effective communication techniques can have an impact. Well-organized face-to-face activities such as the youth rallies can be an effective means of conveying socially sensitive health messages related to HIV/AIDS. It is recommended that the methodology be replicated among other youth groups; that more information materials; including video be developed and that mass media be used in a more planned, targeted, systematic and sustained manner to increase impact. Linkages between mass media and interpersonal communications should be identified and strengthened. Both the process and the result of the project are useful in the planning and implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention in Egypt." "The news media have become the central arena for political conflicts today. It is, therefore, not surprising that the role of the news media in political conflicts has received a good deal of public attention in recent years. e ways in which news media do and do not become active participants in these conflicts. The author's 'political contest' model provides an alternative approach to this important issue. The best way to understand the role of the news media in politics, he argues, is to view the competition over the news media as part of a larger and more significant contest for political control. The book is divided into two parts. While the first is devoted to developing the theoretical model, the second employs this approach to analyse the role of the news media in three conflicts: the Gulf war, the Palestinian intifada, and the attempt by the Israeli right wing to derail the Israeli-Palestinian peace accord." "This is far more than an analysis of the way the U.S. covers the Islamic world. nt that we do not - perhaps are not properly trying to - understand "the new horizons being opened up everywhere in the nonwhite, non-European world" which have roots in history and involve deep cultural differences. The first third of the book deals with "Islam as News," the middle section with "The Iran Story," and the final section with "Knowledge and Power." He contends, "Knowledge and coverage of the Islamic world are defined in the United States by geopolitics and economic interests on - for the individual - an impossibly massive scale, aided and abetted by a structure of knowledge production that is almost as vast and unmanageable." But until we somehow overcome these difficulties and acquire a knowledge in depth the American press cannot cover Islam properly." (Eleanor Blum, Frances G. Wilhoit: Mass media bibliography. 3rd ed.
