tain information on economic aspects of household; find out pattern of use of technology in everyday life; obtain information on community activities and affair; find out the existing situation, attitude and practice in relation to gender; obtain information on situation of health; and find out the mode of people's participation in politics. [...] All data on the basis of which analyses have been made are primary which have been obtained from the field. The people inhabiting the areas that are covered by Radio Palung constituted the sole source of data required to meet the research objectives laid above. The villages covered were Palung, Daman, Chitlang and Bajrabarahi from Makawanpur district. In this research, population of active age and households in the above mentioned four villages constitutes the universe. Five hundred households, which is approximately 20% of the total households, were taken as samples. From each household, one person was chosen as respondents and interviewed. It is to be noted that only the owner of households were chosen as samples, and domestic servants, hired laborers, married daughters and people living in rent were excluded." ite analizar las particularidades de las radios comunitarias regionales, en contraste con el alto número de emisoras de la Región Metropolitana. La teoría analizada y la investigación realizada muestran la necesidad de una política nacional que contemple un plan de capacitación y sostenibilidad económica del proyecto radial comunitario." e is an analysis of the relationships between the community radios and the activities of emerging civil society organizations as part of a post-war movement reflecting a Gramscian discourse of civil society. Examples show how their collaboratively produced programs sought to increase popular participation especially among the formerly marginalized rural and urban poor, as well as to deepen understanding of human rights, promote practices of citizenship, and redefine “news” to fit their particular audiences. A viable civil society depends on the availability of public spaces. The dissertation investigates the issues underlying the battles to legalize the community radios and expand this virtual public space. Analyses of radio broadcasts of school graduation celebrations demonstrate the radios’ central role in activating the local public sphere, building on critiques of Habermas’ foundational concept (1989). Community radio is not a smaller version of commercial radio, promoting consumption which listeners arguably use to create a feeling of belonging (Garcia Canclini 2001). Instead, these radios are a form of popular culture: transformative expressive practices which reconnect people to their own agency and through which they construct a sense of collective identity (Rowe and Schelling 1991:7)." means. The possession of radio increases with increase in literacy. The Radio Nepal has the greatest number of listeners. The 6-8 am, 6-8 pm and 8-10 pm are the times during which the radio is listened by a great many people. The subjects that are preferred by the listeners are news and folk and dohari music. In the study area, only 31% of the household possess television set. It was found that no local newspaper is published from the area and also that there is no any public place or center where people could read newspapers. Moreover, the size of the regular reader of the regional and national newspaper is dismally small. Female lags behind the male in reading the newspapers. It was found that children school going age of a sizable portion of families do not go to school. "This book is the first one in English about the famous community radio stations operated in Bolivia by the miners’ trade unions. Since about 1950, there has been a network of more than twenty radios all locally funded and operated. This book focuses on the most heroic period of their existence du

ring the twenty-five years from about 1960 to 1985. This unique experience of local media is described through the voices of Latin American communication researchers and political activists. The chapters are selected and translated by Alan O’Connor who published the first scholarly article in English on the Bolivian miners’ radios. This book also gives readers an introduction to the methods and concerns of Latin American communication researchers. This work includes overview written by Bolivian communication researchers who first brought the miners’ radios to the attention of researchers on participatory media. These pioneering articles struggle to fit the unruly miners’ radios into the concepts of debates about global communications. They stress what is unique about the Bolivian experience and the successes, problems and lack of resources of the radio stations. The book also includes moving testimonies by participants in the radio stations. An historic transcript from a live broadcast shows how the radios connect up during times of political crisis in an attempt to organize resistance to a military coup. With the decline of the Bolivian mining industry since 1985 many of the radio stations no longer exist. The book documents attempts to rescue at least some of the stations and continue their work into the present." (Publisher description)

(CAMECO Media Forum, 2003/4)

ociety. A whole chapter is dedicated to the importance of human rights, and, as the publication has a regional focus on South Africa, to the South African constitution and its effects on the communication sector. Emphasis is also given to the underlying ethical agenda of community radio journalism, such as reporting gender fairly, and to aspects of radio production, eg, presentation and technical preparation. The handbook is structured in an easy to read manner: each chapter begins with a summary and contains 'let's make it clear' boxes and real life examples, as well as 'handy hints', checklists and additional boxes where difficult words are explained or where background information is provided."
