ess of implementation and is aimed at those involved in the process. Of course, the DSO is a process that affects citizens as part of the broadcasting audience and potential users of mobile broadband, but this guide is aimed at groups and individuals implementing the DSO, including policy makers, regulators, telecommunications operators and service providers, and broadcasters and media professionals." "Government and radio broadcasting stations have been debating the model of digital transmission to be adopted in Brazil, without having come to a consensus. The impasse is related to the technological characteristics of the available systems (HD Radio, DRM, and DAB) that are not integrally adaptabl

e to the model of radio broadcasting, to the regulatory laws, and to the rules of the radio market in the country. Tests done with HD Radio revealed that the digital system does not provide the same coverage as a quality analogical AM radio. Other aspects are the technical conditions of the Brazilian broadcasting stations and their adaptability to a digital system: 37% of them still function with valve transmitters, most of them being between AM commercial and public radios. As they are broadcasting stations with few resources for investment in transistorized equipment, it will be necessary to create public policies of incentive for digitalization, which would collaborate to the sustainability of the sector. The data are integrated into national research, based on a sample of 750 stations, which corresponds to 96.42% of the profile of the Brazilian radio market." (Abstract)

(www.cameco.org)

the phones of listeners 30 minutes prior to a broadcast can boost radio campaign listenership by up to 20%. Two-thirds of partner broadcasters identified the internet as the most important ICT tool in the production of farm radio programs. Farmers who participated in the design and implementation of radio programming with the help of ICTs were four times more likely than those in passive listening communities to adopt agricultural improvements promoted on the radio. 61% of extension agents surveyed said the reach and impact of their extension work was substantially improved because they could be heard on radio programs through call-out programs." management at a station: assessing energy needs; identifying potential energy savings; selecting appropriate energy system and technology – both for energy generation and for energy storage and regulation; planning for the long-term management of the system; selecting and working with energy technology providers to plan and install technology. The guide also includes case studies describing the experiences of radio stations in Uganda, Sudan, Tanzania, Haiti and Indonesia where renewable energy technologies have been implemented. Worksheets and a list of key resources add to the usefulness of the publication.

"This booklet sets out the issues involved in digital transformation in broadcast media from the viewpoint of African media stakeholders and, especially, community radio stations. It aims to correct widespread misconceptions that analogue radio will have to be switched off in the next five years as

part of “digital migration”. At the same time, it warns that the digitisation of broadcast television signals has implications for radio stations around the continent. The same goes for digitisation more broadly, as internet growth also has implications for radio stations. The study has been commissioned by the Panos Institute West Africa, which has a particular interest in community radio. In the nature of the subject matter, the scope of this study has had to be wider than community radio – precisely because of the impact of the larger transitions on this sector [...] One key recommendation of this booklet is that there is no rush for African countries to undertake the very costly and highly complex move from analogue to digital TV. Another is that this particular transition is just one process (albeit a very important one) in the wider perspective of building the African Information Society by means of many digital-related changes to communications."
