trol the terms, conditions, or capabilities of DCTT, nor should they presume to know what is acceptable to members of the public. DCTT should be designed to have a base set of features that protect privacy, with layers of additional capabilities that users may choose to activate. An initial default should be that user location data are not shared, but users should be provided with easy mechanisms and prompts to allow for opting-in to this capability, with encouragement to the public if it is shown to be critical to achieving public health goals. Data collected through DCTT should be made available to public health professionals and to researchers in de-identified form to support population-level epidemiologic analyses." (Summary, page 2)

ntific research, The Ethical Algorithm offers a new approach: a set of principled solutions based on the emerging and exciting science of socially aware algorithm design. Weaving together the science behind algorithm design with stories of citizens, lawyers, scientists, and activists experiencing the trial-and-error of research in real-time, Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth present a strikingly original way forward, showing how we can begin to work together to protect people from the unintended impacts of algorithms—and, sometimes, protect the science that could save us from ourselves." "The study’s overall conclusion is that the Code of Practice has produced positive results. There is a consensus among stakeholders that the Code of Practice is needed. Since disinformation continues to be a widespread problem, the Code, its aims and activities are considered to be highly relevant

. Furthermore, stakeholders consulted for the study also agreed that disinformation is a topic where the EU has an added value and where it should continue to lead and coordinate action. Despite differences in stakeholder views with regards to the effectiveness of self-regulation, there is widespread acknowledgement that the Commission is right in pursuing a dialogue with the social media platforms. There is also acknowledgement that the Code constitutes a first and crucial step in the global fight against disinformation. In this sense, the Code shows European leadership on an issue that is international in nature." (Executive summary, page 3)

ganisations developing and using AI on how to incorporate values into algorithmic decision-making, and how to measure the fulfilment of values using criteria, observables and indicators combined with a context-dependent risk assessment. It thus presents practical ways of monitoring ethically relevant system characteristics as a basis for policymakers, regulators, oversight bodies, watchdog organisations and standards development organisations. So this framework is for working towards better control, oversight and comparability of different AI systems, and also forms a basis for informed choices by citizens and consumers." lar, elite culture of Silicon Valley. In order to develop digital platforms that promote human freedom and socio-economic equality, they outline a set of five “proverbs” for living responsibly in the digital world: (1) information is not wisdom; (2) transparency is not authenticity; (3) convergence is not integrity; (4) processing is not judgment; and (5) storage is not memory. Each chapter ends with a simple exercise to help users break through the habitual modes of thinking that our favorite digital applications promote. Drawing from technical and policy experts, it offers corrective strategies to address the structural and ideological biases of current platform architectures, algorithms, user policies, and advertising models." Each topic and theory are interwoven throughout the volume with detailed sets of questions, additional resources, and suggestions for further research and writing." (Back cover)

Es ist an der Zeit, allgemeine Forderungen nach Transparenz und Nachvollziehbarkeit zu präzisieren und sich mit Detailfragen zu beschäftigen. So bedarf es nicht nur je nach Anwendungsbereich und Nutzergruppen anderer Ansätze (siehe Abschnitt 4), sondern es bestehen auch grundsätzliche Herausforderungen (siehe Abschnitt 6), die stärker in den Blick genommen werden müssen." al media forum or platform or posts on any of your pages, should be sure to comply with the following: Be respectful of the audience. If you would not put it on air or have it printed on the front page, then do not post it online; employees who post content on behalf of their organisation or as part of their jobs must always identify themselves; anyone posting on an organisation’s social media sites or any other official social media pages must uphold the values and mission of the organisation and should coordinate with their manager; do not pick arguments online and do be the first to correct your own mistakes, and don’t alter previous posts without indicating or evidencing that you have done so; always add value. Provide information that is worthwhile. Your brand is an important asset. Whatever you publish will affect your brand; one needs to be ethical and responsible in social media interactions. Verify anything you post for accuracy; always seek guidance on legal related matters." (Best practices, page 4)
