"This guide is both ambitious and modest. Ambitious because it wants to help journalists working in war situations. Modest because we have no miracle solution to offer. But the suggestions you will find in this guide, based on an all too often ignored common sense, should help many reporters to stee

r clear of a lot of problems. We have recalled first key documents that spell out the principles of press freedom, along with charters and declarations concerning the journalistic profession. They come from all over the world, ranging from the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights to the Munich Charter about rights and duties of journalists to a charter the staff of the Japanese newspaper Nihon Shinbun Kyokaï use as guidance. As well as general documents, we thought it very important to include practical advice, such as the BBC gives to all its journalists when they go on a dangerous assignment. We have listed all the precautions to be taken to give better protection in such situations, such as where there are snipers, where people are taken hostage and when journalists are ambushed or have to pass a checkpoint. And when these measures fail, how to start saving a wounded or injured person. Also in the guide are how to go about investigating press freedom violations, as well as a list of the operating rules of the International Committee of the Red Cross and NGOs involved in freedom of expression. These recommendations are practical ones based on long experience in the field. With each new edition, we add suggestions from journalists who work daily in conditions of constantly changing information techniques and technology." (Preface)

"For social change, a model of communication is required that is cyclical, relational and leads to an outcome of mutual change rather than one-sided, individual change. In Section 1 of this report we provide a description of such a model. The model describes a dynamic, iterative process that starts

with a “catalyst/stimulus” that can be external or internal to the community. This catalyst leads to dialogue within the community that when effective, leads to collective action and the resolution of a common problem. The catalyst in the model represents the particular trigger that initiates the community dialogue about a specific issue of concern or interest to the community. This catalyst is a missing piece in most of the literature about development communication, which often assumes that the community spontaneously initiates dialogue and action. The model describes Community Dialogue and Action as a sequential process or series of steps that can take place within the community, some of them simultaneously, and which lead to the solution of a common problem." These include NGO support programmes, training institutions and individual trainers. The toolkit can also be used by NGOs and CBOs themselves to build skills within their own orga

nisations and implement advocacy work. It is important that people using this toolkit already have some basic facilitation skills, for example in guiding large group discussions and small group activities. It is also helpful if they have some previous experience of advocacy work around HIV/AIDS, although this is not essential." (Page 5)

Research and practice continue to expand our understanding of the principles, theories, and techniques that provide a sound foundation for successful health communication programs. The purpose of this revision is to update communication planning guidelines to account for the advances in knowledge and technology that have occurred during the past decade." (Preface)

"Tools for Development" aims to help you deliver successful development activities and interventions by giving you access to the skills and techniques you will need to do so. The demand for it has come from DFID staff both in the UK and overseas who recognise that development initiatives inside and

Over the past decade, DFID has worked with others to develop new methodologies and refine earlier ones to support such approaches; the range of techniques from which to choose is still expanding."
