Entre Parceros y Panas: Estudio de Audiencia

"Se encuestaron a 205 personas, equilibradas entre 50% venezolanas y 48% colombianas, y un 3% colombo-venezolanas. Ubicadas en 25 poblaciones de frontera y ciudades de acogida, quienes dijeron escuchar la radiorevista en un 99%. La transmisién de la radiorevista constituye un aporte al periodismo g ... lobal de información sobre inmigración, transmitido en sitios web en simulcast o webcast, emisoras comunitarias y educativas en FM y AM. La frecuencia de escucha es semanal, en un 72%, en horarios matutinos 62%. En un primer estudio realizado durante el 2019, para identificar el tipo de necesidades de información de la población migrante, el Grupo COMUNICARTE ubica tres prioridades: orientación de ayudas y apoyo; garantías en derechos sobre la migración en Colombia y alternativas laborales. En la presente encuesta encontramos que la audiencia reconoce que el programa resuelve dudas sobre la migración en un 90%, es decir, hay satisfacción a estas primeras necesidades informativas. Durante la trasmisión del año 2020, se identifica que entre los temas más útiles, están en orden de prioridad: derecho a la salud y educación 71%, sobrellevar positivamente la migración 64%, derechos laborales y servicios a la población migrante 62%, derecho a la movilidad humana 61%, la frontera lugar de oportunidades 60%, en un mismo orden riesgos de la movilidad humana y derecho a la nacionalidad 55% y por último: sugerencias sobre tramites migratorios 53%. Vemos que las prioridades han cambiado en torno a los derechos y la situación laboral. Entre los temas que le gustaria incluir a la población que escucha la Radiorevista, tenemos dos modalidades: en un 12% proponen temas nuevos como asesorías psicológicas en radio, sobre todo para miembros de familias que se quedan en su lugar de origen; también quieren saber sobre los avances en las políticas migratorias, y de temas como migración y religión. Y un 88%, tienen interés prioritario en oportunidades laborales; la Interculturalidad y cultura y noticias de movilidad y actualidad en la frontera. Estos dos últimos incluyen al deporte, y la gastronomía como aspectos culturales que unen a colombianos y venezolanos, hay un interés marcado por la convivencia en la frontera y la protección de los más vulnerables. El indagar sobre los temas preferidos por la audiencia ha sido muy importante en el proceso de emisión de la radiorevista, lo primero que encontramos es un panorama solidario, diferente al lenguaje de discriminación e indiferencia que en su mayoria muestran los medios masivos de información y comunicación." "Top-down approaches have limited potential to reach long-lasting and innovative solutions for the settlement of refugees. There is a growing consensus among scholars and policy-makers that governments alone cannot solve complex societal problems, and that participation of non-government actors, sta ... keholders, media companies, civil society, and the refugee themselves is crucial to achieving more positive outcomes in the long-run. In this special issue, we seek to contribute to this growing research field by exploring the issue in a variety of contexts, using different methodologies and with a focus on the inherent linkages between media, society and political authorities in the management of migration and integration processes. Communication Research, at its diverse layers and from a wide array of topics and methods, is expected to contribute to the analysis of social, political, demographic and cultural changes, so tackling the ongoing refugee crisis in the Mediterranean area is an opportunity to connect theoretical and methodological advances with a relevant topic which certainly requires practical, technical and applied contributions. In doing so, screening the online activity turns into an additional sphere to be kept under attention, as a new space for social discussion and action. The origin of the special issue entitled ‘From fragmentation to integration: Addressing the role of communication in refugee crises and settlement processes’ is a Pre-Conference organized by the guest editors as part of the 68th Annual International Communication Association Conference held in Prague, in 2018. The main purpose of this pre-conference was to open a space for dialogue regarding the way refugee crises and integration processes are tackled by political, social and media actors, aiming to set some guidelines to avoid those mistakes previously noticed and leading to a more constructive and conscious coverage and social action. This event brought together researchers, policy advisors, NGO representatives and refugee migrants to discuss the intersections between refugee migration and communication processes. A selection of original articles that were presented at this event form the basis of this special issue. The main themes addressed in the articles of the current special issue are: (1) inclusive digital forms of literacy and activism for/with refugees; (2) local responsesto refugee crises, (re)settlement and their communication strategies; and (3) media representation of humanitarian crises and refugees in their receiving countries." How We Talk about Migration: The Link between Migration Narratives, Policy, and Power

Both welcoming and restrictive narratives can be rooted in a view of what is right—for instance, calling for generosity or compassion toward r ... efugees because of humanitarian values, or arguing for penalties for irregular or unauthorized immigrants because of a commitment to law and order. 2. Many positive migration narratives invoke feelings of national pride rather than attempting to “sell” concrete benefits of migration. In many countries, top-down stories about migration tap into (and affirm) core notions of national identity (such as humanitarianism or diversity) and attempt to invoke pride (such as being a nation of immigrants). Other pro-migration narratives take a more transactional approach by highlighting how immigration reaps benefits for receiving societies, often focusing on migrants’ economic contributions. 3. Elite, top-down messages about migration often clash with views on the ground. Many government leaders spread messages about the benefits of migration, but these do not always align with people’s lived experiences. And in many places, the public has a fundamental mistrust of government or perceives that policymakers have failed to effectively manage migration challenges, which can also spark skepticism. 4. Narratives about migration are not always ideologically driven; they can be motivated by political pragmatism or used to advance other political or policy goals. Political rhetoric on migration is not always connected to ideology or values per se, but may instead be used as a calculated means to advance other policy goals (such as boosting foreign aid, gaining votes, or maintaining political power). The link to political pragmatism may offer an important clue as to why certain messages are amplified in certain settings and with certain audiences but not others. 5. The most dominant threat narratives are driven by insecurity—whether related to economics, culture and identity, personal safety, or national security. The stickiest negative narratives about migration are often interwoven with perceived threats to security (for instance, anxiety about jobs and resources, crime, or about changes to culture or social norms), even if these threats are not well supported by data. Threats to personal safety and security or economic livelihoods can be highly destabilizing, even if they are episodic or only affect a small number of people—and these fears are not easily defused with contrary evidence [...]" (Executive summary, page 3) more
