"Radio Drama brings together the practical skills needed for radio drama, such as directing, writing and sound design, with media history and communication theory. From the early audio broadcasts of 1914 and the development of General Electric’s New York WGY station in 1922, through Orson Welles

s startling Hallowe’en broadcast of War of the Worlds in 1938, to more recent radio spoofs and the subversive challenge from ‘media guerrillas’, Tim Crook explores the history and contemporary practice of radio drama. Challenging the belief that sound drama is a ‘blind medium’, Radio Drama shows how experimentation in radio narrative has blurred the dividing line between fiction and reality in modern media. Using extracts from scripts and analysing radio broadcasts from America, Britain, Canada and Australia, the book explores the practicalities of producing drama for radio." (Publisher description)

"This work is not just another monograph on copyright and neighbouring rights. It represents a fundamental contribution to study of this discipline made, in response to UNESCO’s request, by the eminent specialist on the subject, Professor Delia Lipszyc [...] UNESCO’s programme for the promotion

of teaching of copyright and neighbouring rights has sought to devise appropriate draft syllabuses, while encouraging the establishment of professorships for the study of this discipline in universities. In collaboration with eminent experts in each region, the proposed syllabuses have already been brought into line with the legal contexts of Latin America, French-speaking Africa, the Arab States, the Asian and Pacific region, English-speaking Africa and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The updated version of this work, the Spanish original of which was published in 1993, is an additional contribution to this endeavour. It responds to the deeply felt concern of universities to see the teaching programmes adopted by them supported by a work which covers the subject in its every aspect, its basis being statute law throughout the world and the experience of its application. Professor Lipszyc’s work represents a remarkable contribution in this respect. It gives the teaching of copyright and neighbouring rights a greater operational dimension in a universal context. Set out as a university manual, it presents, with its clear and searching approach, the many and varied aspects of this important legal discipline as reflected in the different laws throughout the world, the relevant international conventions and current international thinking on the subject, in the light of technological progress in the methods of creation, production and dissemination of works of the mind. It offers appropriate clarification of legal concepts hitherto the province of specialists, and makes them more readily understood. This work is, in short, a precious resource with which students and specialists in copyright and neighbouring rights can be provided, and an invaluable tool in aiding the various parties involved in cultural activity to organize their professional relationships on a sound and equitable basis." Case studies are presented of how NGO's have succeeded in evaluating these complex social processes within the constraints imposed by resources, staff skills, existing monitoring and requirements and external pressures. The book illustrates genuine, innovative attempts to bring the rhetoric of evaluating impact into the reality of ongoing development programmes." (Catalogue Intermediate Technology Publications 2000)

"Radio journalists have witnessed much of the history of the twentieth century. alism explores the way radio has covered the most important stories this century and the way in which it continues to document events in Britan, America, Europe and many other countries around the world. International Radio Journalism is both a theoretical textbook and a practical guide for students of radio journalism, reporters, editors and producers. The book details training and professional standards in writing, presentation, technology, editorial ethics and media law in America, Britain, Australia and other English speaking countries and examines the major public sector broadcast networks such as the BBC, CBC, NPR and ABC as well as the work of commercial and small public radio stations. Timothy Crook investigates the way in which news reporting has been influenced by governments and media conglomerates and identifies an undercurrent of racial and sexual discrimination throughout the history of radio news."
