"This book has been written as a tool for people involved or interested in communication and natural resource management who seek a better understanding of how different theories and strategic change principles relate to actual practise. It is not, however, a book of theory nor is it an argument for

one approach over another. Instead, it relates a variety of theories and change principles in simplified, almost schematic form, to a series of real initiatives in the field through interactive «experiences». It asks that the reader become a participant in a process that requires reading and analysing each initiative using different theoretical lenses. Each «experience» is organised around a theme, a learning objective, a description of an actual natural resource management and communication initiative, and one or two theoretical lenses through which to analyse the initiative. As you work through each «experience», you will be asked questions about the theory and change principles and how they relate to the initiative. The idea is not to «discover» the right approach but rather to create an interactive space that enables you to reflect on what might work in your own context and also on how different contexts may require different approaches, principles and theoretical frameworks." "Much research on urban development is supply-led - generated by the interests of donors and researchers in the North rather than the needs of poor households in the growing cities of the South, Communicating for Development focuses attention on the most fundamental of questions about development: h

ow can the lessons of good practice and innovation and the results of research benefit the poor? The book offers in-depth discussion about how the communication process works - or doesn't work. It questions and challenges: who are the stakeholders; what are the best vehicles for transferring knowledge; why are local networks and intermediaries so important; what can hinder the communication process; and how may these gaps and barriers be overcome? Moreover, the book challenges traditional participatory methods of relating to the needs of poor urban communities and proposes instead the application of new communication and knowledge management methods currently used in business management." "Over the past eight years, GreenCOM has learned a great deal about what works and what doesn’t. The project has also functioned as a clearinghouse for common questions that people around the world raise about EE&C. Most importantly, GreenCOM has demonstrated the value of EE&C and helped managers,

planners, and decision makers understand that it is much more than just posters, brochures, videos, and textbooks. EE&C encompasses a wide variety of activities and products that lead to changed behavior. Although GreenCOM has accumulated and disseminated a wealth of lessons about influencing the environmental behavior of diverse individuals, communities, and even governments, there is much left to learn and do. In the following pages you will learn how environmental education and communication can benefit you in your work. This booklet summarizes the lessons learned from eight years of experience in over thirty countries. It provides environmental protection and natural resource managers, planners, and decision makers with insight on how EE&C can help them achieve their goals and objectives." "Section One, Fundamental Concepts in Environmental Education and Communciation (EE&C) provides an orientation to four theoretical perspectives that have shaped GreenCOM’s approach to environmental education and communication projects: behavior change, participation, gender, and systems thinking.
...
Each has its own research framework and following, yet each contributes an important set of ideas to environmental education and communication activities. In Section Two, Planning EE&C Programs, a variety of GreenCOM experiences illustrate the basic process of designing education and communication programs: needs assessment, formative research, pre-testing, and evaluation. Taken together they form a reliable and well-tested model for program development. Section Three, Conducting EE&C Activities, looks at staff and participant training workshops, mass media campaigns, and how EE&C can affect public policy. Section Four, Putting It All Together, highlights several successful countrywide strategies from GreenCOM’s field experience. These cases illustrate some of the diverse approaches to building capacity and planning and implementing environmental education and communication. The projects involved training, policy initiatives, awards schemes, curriculum development, and multifaceted communication campaigns." (Page xiv)

l Communication should become an integral component of policies and projects, and thereby help ensure that adequate human and financial resources are allocated to this end. The idea for this book was born at an international workshop on "Communicating the Environment" organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) in Bonn, Germany in late 1996." ble way. Use it for brainstorming ideas, for planning and designing your own programmes, for learning from our own experiences - both good and bad - and for useful contacts. It includes simple - and some might say "basic" - recommendations. This handbook does not pretend to offer systematic and comprehensive management tools. Experience in Mongolia has shown that keeping everything as simple and practical as possible enables a great number of NGOs, CBOs and concerned individuals to be involved. If diluted into too much terminology and details about state-of-the-art project cycle management, the process often leads to frustration and discouragement. The objective here is to foster action. Moreover, it is a process - we believe that one learns by doing. The sophistication in project design and implementation will grow as the programme continues and as support is provided to these organizations. For a first phase programme, getting the confidence of these organizations and individuals and harnessing their energy is the most important goal." (User guide, page 2)
