"The contributions of this special issue are grouped in three sections: context, theoretical framework and empirical research. The first articles set up two important dimensions of the context we are living in that have to be definitely improved if we want to take advantage of the positive sides of

Covid-19’s effects to bring about real social relations and a good communication of science [...] The following articles deal with three important core components needed to set up a theoretical framework, from which this issue intends to start a serious scholarly conversation around the lessons learned from the Covid’s impact on social communication: (1) how a person knows and shapes his/her judgment in practical affairs when s/he is critically involved in them, (2) why and how science has surrendered to technology in the last decades, (3) and how practical knowledge is socially shared [...] The context and theoretical framework having been set up, the issue enters into the empirical part of our research: several papers examine the news coverage of the Church dealing with the pandemic in a good sample of newspapers around the world, one paper looks at how social media have engaged in the response to the pandemic by the Catholic Church, and another at how local churches have managed the challenges of the pandemic [...] The analysis of worldwide media coverage aims to find out how the mainstream press has portrayed the role of Christian churches and other religious bodies in dealing with the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. All researchers have broadly shared a common qualitative methodology: looking for the frames and inducing the topoi (common places) underlying the resulting frames of the examination of news and editorial items." "Religious matters are much more present in standard media coverage than many people think. This paper discusses eight of the most relevant issues and events about the Catholic Church that made news headlines in 2018. The highlights, listed in chronological order, are: Pope Francis’ January trip t

o Chile and Peru; the fifth anniversary in March of the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio as pope; the release of Wim Wenders’ documentary film Pope Francis - A Man of His Word; Pope Francis’ August trip to the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland; the global clergy sexual abuse crisis and the Viganò affair; the agreement between the Holy See and China on appointment of bishops in September; the canonization of Archbishop Romero and Pope Paul VI in Rome in October; and the Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment also in October. The selection is inevitably subjective, but the author has chosen these topics mainly because they received substantial coverage from international mainstream media." (Abstract)

"The media's coverage of religion is an important question, given the central role which news media play in ensuring that people are up-to-date with religion news developments. The book examines it in different countries. After an introductory section looking at trends in religion news in print, on-

line journalism, and as a subject of foreign news, the book surveys religion reporting in five key countries: USA, Russia, India, China, & Nigeria. The book then looks at media events through the cases of the election of Pope Francis, and the death of rabbis. The book addresses the question of the influence of religion reporting in politics; the impact of religion reporting upon religious identity; and the role of social media - through looking at case studies in France, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Israel."

"This study presents the results of research into the media's capacity to carry religious messages. It is based on a qualitative content analysis of original texts inspired by religious motives in Slovak Catholic and secular press. The main focus is the messages as such, related topoi (bases for arg

uments) and their epiphenomena. The study focuses on the topoi and seeks an answer to the following key question: What ‘common ideas’ (in Greek topoi) do mass-media messages and religious messages refer to? Based on the comparison of the topoi of original religious messages and messages covered by media, the study concludes that the key topoi of religious messages and of media messages resulting from it differ significantly. The difference in topoi arises mainly from a different pre-understanding –that is, attitude of faith / absence of faith in a journalist, and the related trust / distrust of the church. Apart from basic personal predispositions, the study points to a number of important factors such as comprehensibility, attitude on the capacity of mass media to evangelize, compliance with journalistic form, understanding of the role of news values (conflict in particular), and level of religiousness of the language used in massmedia communication. Finally, the study offers several recommendations and outlines the challenges faced by church and secular media communicators." (Abstract)

"This book analyzes media coverage of major news stories in which religion is a major component and recounts how journalist often miss, or misunderstand, these stories because they do not take religion seriously, or misunderstand religion when they do take it seriously. Since religion is a major and

growing factor in human affairs throughout the world and, hence in major news stories, including those stories often mislabeled “secular,” if reporters do not take it seriously or understand it, then they will be poorer reporters. To the extent that journalists do not grasp events’ religious dimensions, both global and local, they are hindered from, and sometimes incapable of, describing what is happening in the world around us. The book contains six case studies that each describe an important event, issue, trend, problem, or situation, seek to show the centrality of religion to the story, then outline how journalists actually covered it, and how they often got it wrong. The two concluding chapters focus on ways, both conceptual and practical, of improving coverage." (Publisher description)

seen in the movies' hundred-year history of representing Catholics. Each chapter is written by a noted scholar of American religion who concentrates on one movie engaging important historical, artistic, and religious issues. Each then places the film within American cultural and social history, discusses the film as an expression of Catholic concerns of the period, and relates the film to others of its genre."
