unication and the media are widely recognized as powerful tools in conflicts and war. Although there has been significant academic attention on the relationship between the media, conflict and war, academic efforts to understand this relationship have tended to focus primarily on the links between communication and conflict, rather than on communication and peace. In order to make sense of peace it is essential to look at communication in its many facets, mediated or not. This is true within many of the diverse strands that make up the field of communication and peace, but it is also true in the sense that a holistic and interdisciplinary approach is missing from the literature. This book addresses this widely acknowledged lacuna by providing an interdisciplinary perspective on the field, bringing together relevant, but so far largely isolated, streams of research. In doing so, it aims to provide a platform for further reflection of the meaning of, and requirements for, peace in our contemporary world with a focus on de-escalation, conflict transformation, reconciliation and processes of peacebuilding - as opposed to conflict escalation or crisis intervention." alist, first briefly introduces the role of media in conflicts, then offers a model curriculum for a training programme, and concludes by describing training experiences in Kenya and Somalia. The curriculum outline is intended for small groups of relatively inexperienced to mid-career reporters, editors and producers working in conflict-stressed environments and emerging democracies. It emphasises the critical importance of basic standards of journalism, explores the dynamics of conflict and the influence of reliable journalism on conflict mediation, and finally examines specific aspects of delivering a more conflict-sensitive style of reporting." : 1. Explanations of 'conflict' and of the different kinds of violence (ie, physical, cultural and structural) 2. Definitions and examples for talkshows and the different formats commonly used (face to face, roundtable, phone-in) 3. Notes on issues and practices, discussing questions like: how to talk about taboo subjects, how to deal with hate speech, accusation, censorship or even extremely sensitive issues like genocide, and how to seek the common ground of conflicting parties? Moreover, the manual contains a planning checklist and suggestions for conflict mapping in order to gain a better understanding of the conflict, and it shows the differences between peace and conflict-oriented talkshows." .
