The majority of journalists were employed by their media outlets and undertook pieces that peaked their personal interest. Most journalists believed that their role in society was to provide information to the public although most believed that the current reports being produced are sensationalized. Consistent with this finding half of the journalists shared that they believed that the public perceived journalistic output as only somewhat trustworthy. About two thirds of journalists shared that they have never had to subsidize their investigative reports with about one quarter sharing that they have never been commissioned for an assignment without the media outlet covering their expenses. More than half of the journalists believed that the level of safety of journalists in the past few years was dependent on the journalist’s location. Although, about two thirds of journalists revealed that they have experienced issues with safety while performing their job with half of the journalists stating that they have experienced verbal abuse. Almost half of the journalists believed that they were somewhat supported by their editorial team although they had to provide some of their own tools and or materials. Most journalists reported that government officials are hesitant to share information with the media although most reported that journalists are able to openly investigate and report on government wrongdoings in their country." "Taking into account the actual situation in the region, the support that VIKES provides for independent journalism is more urgent than ever. alists’ safety and misinformation campaigns. In these conditions, the work that VIKES has been doing in the region has been relevant and successful. It has promoted the right of civil society to information and the right of media to freedom of expression. Activities that were planned in the programme document on the defense of fundamental rights to exercise free speech and democracy were implemented, and positive results were achieved. All the partner organizations have strengthened the exercise of democracy through digital media and investigative journalism, promoting citizen participation in public policies and improving the open-access and right to information. Networking and cooperation between independent media, journalists and CSOs are more reliable than ever in the region, and a new concept of collaborative journalism was introduced with positive results. VIKES supported media and independent journalists in producing high-quality information and investigative stories, supporting them to attract wider audiences. Training in business development, marketing and effective management was organised by the programme, and the financial sustainability of partners was improved. Even so, the independent media in the region is still dependent on external funding and will be, until the political situation in the region will improve. To be more effective and to improve the effectiveness of the Regional Independent Media Support Programme in the future, VIKES should increase the number of the partners and independent media representatives (also those currently exiled) to receive support from the programme. The main problem of independent public media remains the lack of financing and security. In a meeting with independent journalists in Nicaragua, where the government has threatened to continue to imprison journalists and publicly insults media professionals, they underlined the importance of solidarity networks among international organizations and press associations. According to them, VIKES has done bold work, and its efforts have supported the professionals who remain to practice “survival journalism” and need all the backing to continue to inform the population." Schmucler. We propose seeing media practices as a critical dialogue between knowledges and cultures (Freire); as mediations between popular culture, the cultural industry, and political power (Martín-Barbero); as media-aided cultural migraations (Monsiváis); as heterogeneity of temporalities and practices (García Canclini); as insurrection performed by women, youth, indigenous people, Afro-descendants, and the digital world (Reguillo); as baroque aestheitcs (Echeverría); as a bastard experience of 'coolture' (Rincón); as a field where communication for good living is possible (Contreras)." larly in relation to disciplines outside the archives. Over ten years have passed since the first volume of 'Community Archives', and inspired by continued research as well as by the formal recognition of community archives in the UK, the community archives movement has become an important area of research, recognition and appreciation by archivists, archival scholars and others worldwide. Increasingly the subject of papers and conferences, community archives are now seen as being in the vanguard of social concerns, markers of community-based activism, a participatory approach exemplifying the on-going evolution of 'professional' archival (and heritage) practice and integral to the ability of people to articulate and assert their identity." s for future digital inclusion initiatives. First, public policy can effectively reduce access gaps when it addresses the trifecta of network, device, and skill provision. Second, this triple-crown of public policy is highly effective for longitudinal effect when implemented early via educational institutions. Third, rural-urban digital inequality is resistant to change such that rural populations benefit less from policy initiatives than their urban counterparts. Fourth, digital inclusion in rural areas and among marginalized populations is most effective when cocreated with communities to ensure community investment, participation, and control. Fifth, stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic are rapidly increasing our dependence on digital technologies, making digital inclusion more important than ever for education and rural communities. We therefore close the article with discussion of how the COVID-19 pandemic is amplifying digital disadvantage and exclusion across the Americas, the Caribbean, and the globe. (Abstract)

ny, United Kingdom, and United States. We have selected these 11 to represent as wide a geographical base as possible, and cover some of the richest and poorest countries in the report [...] As the country profiles show, a growing set of women-led protest movements against femicide, sexual assault, and online harassment around the world have created a new debate around how the news portrays women, and new conversations about who is in the newsroom deciding the agenda and framing the news. While news reporting has sometimes played an important role in these debates, it is also clear that many of them are driven by feminists who use social media as activist tools to speak out and organise against sexism and misogyny, sometimes in the news media too [...] Key Findings: Men are more likely than women to say that they are ‘extremely’ or ‘very’ interested in political news across all markets; Women are more likely than men to express high levels of interest in news about health and education; Women are more likely than men to report that they use TV news programmes or bulletins; Facebook is still an important source of news for both men and women, but YouTube and Twitter are more popular with men; Women will talk about news face to face with friends and family more than men. They are less likely to comment on news on news websites or on social media; Women’s levels of trust in news, and concern over ‘fake news’ online, are broadly similar to men’s." ssions in the region are those that take into account the following criteria: they work together with grassroots social processes in their respective localities; they strengthen cultural diversity and value the identity of individuals and collectives; they search for technological solutions adapted to the conditions of each place; they seek to form alliances. The objective of this study was, in the first place, to identify the difficulties for communicating in the Amazon, but also to make proposals for change. In the different forums established in the context of this research, as well as during the fieldwork, it was possible to become acquainted with projects that seek to improve the participation of regional inhabitants in communication, information, and dialogue networks. Some of these projects have existed for years, while others are still in development. These proposals can be systematized according to their contribution to the creation of solutions for socioenvironmental conflicts from a communications perspective. We have thus identified four main areas: cultural diversity and biodiversity; participation and sustainable development; managing communication autonomously; forging alliances to increase the visibility of socioenvironmental conflicts."
