We then examine the usefulness of such ‘‘crowdseeded’’ data in two ways. First, we implement a downstream experiment on aid and conflict and find evidence that aid can lead to fewer conflict events. Second, we examine conflict diffusion in Eastern Congo and find evidence that key dynamics operate at very micro levels. There is a strong interest in health information in Sierra Leone. 86% of Sierra Leoneans want to receive more information on health for themselves and their families. People are particularly interested in receiving information on health issues that they already have some knowledge of – 29% mentioned that they wanted information on malaria and typhoid. This compares with the 11% of people who want to receive information on health topics that they currently do not know much about. People act upon information that enables them to address symptoms quickly at home, is cheap to access and both cheap and easy to implement. Nine per cent of Sierra Leoneans have never used formal healthcare services. There are a number of reasons why people do not seek formal health providers or access health information." This is reflected in patterns of listenership, with different stations popular in different parts of the country. Overall in the country, no station reaches more than one-third of adult Sierra Leoneans. Reaching a national audience through radio, therefore, requires working with a large number of broadcast partners. In contrast to radio access, just under half of Sierra Leoneans (45%) can access TV or DVD content and 13% can access newspapers. Access to mobile phones is high, now achieving a similar reach to radio: 83% of people report having access to a mobile phone. There is significant potential for leveraging this reach and the opportunity offered by 2G and 3G mobile phone platforms as a means of distributing media content to audiences. More than half of mobile phone owners (52%) have a basic feature phone."

The unfolding collapse of traditional media models has given rise to outside-the-box innovations as the industry bids to not only survive but also safeguard journalism, and this has partly inspired the proliferation of non-profit outfits. While the US leads the way, non-profit organisations are becoming popular across the world.
Uganda's URN, founded in 2005, is credited for providing affordable and quality news to 85 radio stations and a couple of newspapers. The news agency is also recognised for raising the standard of journalism with its independence from advertising pressure and motivated journalists, as well as functioning as a de facto public broadcaster. URN's non-profit status has enabled it to stand out from the Ugandan media scene described in Chapter One where market-driven journalism impinges on the quality of media content. However, over-dependence on a single external funder, DGF, has exposed the model as fragile and unsustainable. With the current grant due to lapse in 2017, albeit the possibility of renewal, and URN unsure of what to do next, the model's precariousness has been laid bare. Nevertheless URN’s sustainability should be understood within its proper context. To its funders the news agency is not a journalism model but rather part of a media development programme seeking to promote good governance and accountability in Uganda. Au-delà des résultats obtenus, ce projet doit également servir de base concrète pour améliorer la pratique des programmes d’informations de Studio Tamani au Mali dans le but d’amplifier leur impact. Le concept de l'étude a été élaboré en prenant en compte d'une part les hypothèses de travail du programme de la fondation Hirondelle au Mali et d'autre part les publications actuelles concernant les effets des médias. Ainsi, les thèses examinées portent à la fois sur les effets visés par le programme de la fondation Hirondelle au Mali et les hypothèses plus générales avancées par la recherche en matière d'effets médiatiques. Parallèlement, cette étude se veut explorative, intégrant ainsi dans toutes ses étapes la possibilité de découvrir de nouveaux effets jusqu'ici inconnus. À cet effet, deux méthodes couramment utilisées dans les études médiatiques ont été combinées : l'enquête et l'analyse de contenus. L'étude permet de dégager quatre conclusions principales :
1 : Studio Tamani fournit plus d‘informations sur le conflit et ses auditeurs se sentent mieux informés, de façon significative
2 : L’écoute de Studio Tamani éveille donc l’intérêt politique en général, consolidant ainsi une condition pour que les citoyens prennent part au dialogue politique et à la recherche de solutions.
3 : L’écoute aux émissions de Studio Tamani incite plus aux discussions à propos du conflit. Cet effet se restreint toutefois au cercle de la famille et des amis.
4 : Il y a une préférence significante parmis les écouteurs des émissions de Studio Tamani pour le «dialogue » comme solution au conflit inter-malien.
Si l’étude n’a pas pu vérifier certaines hypothèses de travail trop ambitieuses du programme Hirondelle, comme l’idée que Studio Tamani encourageait un « engagement vers la paix » ou encore une « culture de la paix », elle prouve toutefois qu’écouter les émissions de Studio Tamani a des effets favorables au processus de paix." In the past decade or so, physical attacks on journalist have been the most prevalent form of violation against journalists in Ghana. In this essay, a single case study of Donkor is examined together with relevant documents as the tip of an iceberg to demonstrate and paint a picture of the harrowing and degrading experience of physical and other forms of attacks against journalists in Ghana and its implications for safeguarding press freedom and the fundamental human rights of people. The incidence of attacks against journalists and how such perpetrators often go unpunished, though not a phenomenon peculiar only to Ghana, needs serious interrogation given the latitude of freedom of the media guaranteed in the 1992 fourth republican Constitution of Ghana. It is pertinent to ask: how far have stakeholders contributed to the promotion of journalists’ safety as prescribed in UNESCO’s Safety of Journalists Document? While chronicling some instances of actions, which tend to endanger the lives of journalists in the line of duty, I would conclude that a concerted effort is required to enable journalists, the public, civil society organisations, international organisations and state institutions to initiate strategic actions aimed at tackling the problem." rnalists as the relatively low standard deviations (s=.75, s=.77, and s=.88 respectively) indicate. It is particularly noteworthy the notion of reporting things as they are and promoting tolerance. About a decade ago, the Kenyan media was perceived to have contributed to the spate of political violence that engulfed the country. The media has strenuously struggled to shed off that perception. Further, journalists tend to see themselves as objective and therefore it is little surprising that straight reporting scored highly on the list. Other roles with a standard deviation score less than s=1.0 included letting people express their views (81.1%, s=.89) and telling stories about the world (78.9%, s=.98). Providing analysis of current affairs was considered an important role by 81.7 percent of the respondents. The other roles, in their order of percentage scores and possibly relative importance, are indicated in Table 1 below. It is instructive what Kenyan journalists considered less important roles: conveying a positive image of political leadership (31.8%) and being an adversary of the government (36.1%). Nearly all roles related to politics are at the bottom of the table. This is a unique finding, as Kenyan media is often accused of being overly political. The headlines and lead stories are often all about politics. It is noteworthy that journalism in Kenya can sometimes be fairly adversarial in relation to the government. Given the promulgation of a new constitution nearly seven years ago, with clauses protective of media freedom, there is often a boldness in Kenyan media which is unique compared to the experiences of neighboring countries.
Roles supportive of a development agenda scored somewhere in the middle of the table. This is an important and surprising perception as well. Kenya is a developing country and it would have been natural to expect that development was a default role for the media. But development-related responses scored 78.8 percent and 69.2 percent respectively. While this is still a high score, it is not among the top considerations of the media." untries that are liberal democracies. In the past decade however, the World Press Freedom Day has remained a constant reminder of the escalation of violence and conflicts all over the world. The consequences of which journalists and other media workers have had to bear in their quest/bid to fulfill a sacred mission: the people deserve the right to know. Statistically, more than 1000 media professionals were said to have been killed in the line of duty. Some of these killings were state ogranised, while very few cases were investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice. In Nigeria, in spite of the nation’s democratic experience, a sizeable number of journalists and media professionals had been harassed, intimidated and murdered, in the discharge of their duties especially with the Boko Haram insurgence. This study examines the impact of the World Press Freedom Day to the safety of journalists and other media professionals with the specific focus on Nigeria. It also wishes to draw attention to the vital role of the media in promoting sustainable peace, democracy and development. The paper adopts a historical observation method and hopes to underscore the connection between the safety of journalists and peoples freedom of expression." (Abstract)
