(Introduction)

"This article focuses on events surrounding the third season of 'Indian Idol' in order to assess the changing relationship between television, everyday life, and public political discourse in contemporary India. In the summer of 2007, media coverage of Indian Idol focused on how people in Northeast

India cast aside decades-old separatist identities to mobilize support for Amit Paul and Prashant Tamang, the two finalists from the region. Situating this media phenomenon in relation to the changing landscape of Indian television and the socio-historical context of ethno-national politics in Northeast India, I explore how reality television, combined with mobile media technologies and practices, has enabled new modes of cultural and political expression. Positing the notion of “mobile publics,” I argue that participatory cultures surrounding television create possibilities for the renewal of everyday forms of interaction in public settings that may have been forgotten, subdued, or made impossible under certain political circumstances." "Poverty, violence and underdevelopment are the prevailing images of Africa in German history and geography textbooks. Pre-colonial African history, African culture and philosophy are not covered by Eurocentric curricula. Classic and modern western literature is interspersed with stereotypes about A

frican people; these stereotypes often pass uncommented by the teachers. As one of the results, students of African descent and their parents commonly experience racism in schools expressed by the fellow students and teachers. The students of African descent are labelled naturally “lazy”, “wild” and “needy”; they are rather expected to excel in sports and music than in science and philosophy, and are undervalued accordingly. In a longitudinal case study, the main project investigates the relationship between the portrayal of Africa in educational context and these racial prejudices. The project anticipates to revise textbooks and curriculum in this regard, to create new un-biased teaching materials on Africa and to test them in real school lessons. The current paper presents the results of an empirical pilot study in a school in Hamburg. A survey conducted with 12-17 year old students in a Hamburg school on their image of Africa showed that they see Africa predominantly as an “exotic” and/or hopeless and violent place; this view is consistent with the one presented in their textbooks. Alongside with these racial stereotypes, students’ answers contained names of their classmates of African descent." (Abstract)

"Audience research should be an essential part of every broadcasting venture. However, many non-Commercial radio stations hardly do audience research. Often this is due to a lack of human resources and to a large extent also a lack of understanding and awareness of the nature, benefit, and role of a

udience research. By taking into consideration the special nature of non-Commercial Christian local radio stations in Norway, this research shows how these radio stations can simplify and adapt some of the available research methods to their needs and budget. After discussing, evaluating, and adapting surveys, panel studies, focus groups, and in-depth interviews, two of the methods are tested in two different radio stations. At the end of the discussion, a research toolbox is presented, which provides the stations with a plan for audience research over a three-year period." (Back cover)
