"This book is for broadcasters of all flavours, colours and tastes. Whether you are reporting politics, business, sports, fashion or any other beat, which appear far removed from science, you will benefit from having a basic awareness of science. Science is not all about faraway galaxies or subatomi

c particles. It is about explanations about natural phenomena, including our society. So, politics, religion or our thought processes or imagination are not beyond the scope of scientific investigation. For example, if you are reporting a local conflict, there are enough scientific studies on aggression and violence that may throw light on the situation. You can give a new spin on sports if you have enough understanding about sports science and the pharmacology of performance enhancing drugs. Business cycles are specific examples of quasi-periodic phenomena and your reporting would bear a fresh perspective if you could dig deep into non-linear dynamics. How can you report on a crime without understanding the basics of forensic science?" (Introduction)

unity-based research. In fact, we believe that researchers have an ethical obligation to ensure that research findings are disseminated to research participants, as well as other individuals and institutions in the communities in which we work. In an effort to increase ease and efficiency, this document provides key strategies for dissemination, including practical advice and specific templates you can adapt for your use. Through this strategic dissemination approach, CARE (Community Alliance for Research and Engagement) intends to distribute salient findings to affected communities, participant agencies, health departments, researchers, policy makers, and health advocacy groups." on generally dispersed within the organisation. 3. Emphasis continues to be on the supply side of research, with a weak understanding of and capacity to support the demand side of research communication. 4. Many examples of good practice and of innovative initiatives, also related to engaging users and other stakeholders in the research communication process. 5. Several donors are placing a priority on being a learning organisation, with research communication contributing to internal knowledge management. 6. No comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation systems in place to assess the effectiveness and relevance of various research communication approaches, and to feed this information back into research communication policy and investment decisions. 7. Most donors maintain their own web portals / archives of research findings. 8. There is a strong interest among donors to explore and expand open access to funded research findings. 9. Most donors would welcome strengthening networking and linkages between donors interested in research communication to improve efficiency and effectiveness, for shared learning and for greater impact. 10. DFID is recognized and valued as one of the leaders in the field of research communication." (Summary)

"The toolkit is meant to serve both as a resource for the regional training workshops for National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) coordinators as well as a resource base for them for national focal points (NFPs) when they are back in their work place and are dealing with Communicat

ion, education and public awareness (CEPA) issues as part of their daily responsibilities. The toolkit provides guidance on where, when and how to use a wide range of education and communication interventions. The toolkit consists of 4 sections that contain guidance and tools for CEPA interventions by NBSAP coordinators: What is CEPA and how to get started; How to network and raise awareness; How to engage stakeholders and mainstream biodiversity; How to plan communication strategically The sections and the issues in each section are based on the surveys exploring the questions end users have. Most of the content is organized on the basis of the question ‘how to’. As NBSAP coordinators are busy people and have little time to read, the content of each HOW TO aspect of CEPA in all sections is presented in three different ways: Fact sheets; Examples; Checklists. The toolkit in this way offers an opportunity for readers to flip through and zap from one page that attracts their attention to another that could be of immediate use to them. The toolkit is not meant to read as a text book or manual on communication from A–Z." (Preface)

culture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) and its partners. The approach is practical in orientation, covering topics including: (a) planning, building and maintaining a sustainable digital publishing system, focusing on a common scenario of setting up a Web site as a digital publishing platform; (b) producing user-friendly digital publications and making them accessible; (c) some recent international developments in digital publishing; and (d) recommended software tools and technical resources for further reading." they contribute to the initial, intermediate, and long-term outcomes of health development efforts—something which perhaps we all instinctively recognize but have failed to track in the past. Such a track record will go a long way to making information products and services an integral part of future global health development efforts. What makes this guide special is that it brings together knowledge about monitoring and evaluating information products and services from dozens of health organizations—all members of the HIPNET community of practice." "In the words of a South African researcher, the media can help research become linked to policy processes by “getting you into the kitchen, being part of the soup-making”. This paper explores the roles the media play and looks at the linkages between policy, research and media. It considers som

e of the dilemmas faced, and the options and approaches available when a research programme, institute or researcher is constructing a media strategy. It lays out some of the main steps in developing a strategy. This paper is complemented by Working with the Media: A guide for researchers, which includes practical guidance and tips for engagement with the media. In this paper the term ‘policy’ includes policy formulation, implementation and evaluation and is not restricted to that of government but includes international organisations, bilateral agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the private sector and others. The media is taken to include community, local, national and international forms of radio, print, television and online services." (Introduction)

"Commissioned by the Department of Science and Technology of the government of South Africa, this is a major study of the present state of research publishing policy and practice in South Africa. ation that contributes materially to the sustainable prosperity of all South Africa's people." Individual chapters cover a bibliometric assessment of South African research publications; a comprehensive analysis of South African research journals; a survey of journal editors' opinions; and an analysis of global e-research trends and their implications for South African research publishing, both in print and online formats. The final chapter sets out conclusions and recommendations for a strategically enhanced role of research publishing in South Africa. It recommends that all stakeholders in the South African research enterprise should each in their own way support local/national research journals that actively seek to be of international quality and are indexed in an internationally recognised, bibliometrically accessible database, through following best-practice in editorial judgment and peer review. Among other main recommendations of the report are: that funds should be allocated from the grants made by the Department of Education for research publication to support scholarly publishing in South Africa; that the Department of Science and Technology should take responsibility for ensuring that Open Access initiatives are promoted to enhance the visibility of all South African research articles and to make them accessible to the entire international research community, including the development of research repositories; and that the Academy of Science of South Africa be mandated to carry out external peer review and associated quality audit of all South African research journals in five-year cycles, and act as a support and quality control body for scholarly publishing."
