mmunication tools, information, and opportunities for people to come together to explore, debate, and express ideas. Although other aid organizations have used film as a medium of change and instruction, unlike the FilmAid approach this has generally been ad hoc, irregular, and part of a wider program of interventions. The FilmAid approach is therefore unique and offers an opportunity to conduct a study of the impact of showing films to a refugee population. Apart from an evaluation conducted in 2003 of FilmAid’s own program in Kakuma, Kenya, the authors are not aware of any other formal assessments. Consequently, there is little known regarding the impact of the FilmAid program. Gaining knowledge on this subject will not only assist FilmAid in their operation of programs, but will also provide guidance for other organizations interested in using films as interventions. The purpose of the assessment reported here was to evaluate the impact of the FilmAid International program in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kakuma, Kenya. We used a three-phase approach employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. The assessment was led by an independent consultant assisted by faculty at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) and the staff of FilmAid." (Executive summary)

"This paper outlines and provides evidence for the effects of five key approaches to health information and communication in relation to the health-related MDGs; according to the different stakeholders involved, i.e. Health policy makers, health researchers, health care providers, patients and citiz

ens. This paper places emphasis on creating an enabling environment for health through sustainable health systems that are integrated with responses from other sectors, and on pro-poor health services. This paper is not making a case for exceptional status for health communication. Rather it is trying to give examples of the impact of integrating communication approaches into health strategies, and examples of the diminished effect of communication when this is not the case. This paper endorses the knowledge that adequate funding is a prerequisite of a functioning health system, as are management systems and practices, information systems, and human resources (WHO, 2006)." he pattern of basic concept - core theory - specific methods - implementation. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to health education and health promotion. Chapters 2-4 are the core chapters, dealing with human behaviour, communication and teaching. Chapters 5-10 give details of communication methods for different target groups: individuals and small groups (face-to-face), communities, and school children and out-of-school youths. They also deal with the popular and mass media. Chapter 11 provides guidelines on planning, evaluation and implementation. The author states that what may work in one community may not work in another. He stresses the need to apply these methods in a systematic way, learn from mistakes, involve the communities and evaluate, in order to improve the effectiveness of the activities."
