lities without fear of retaliation. In this chapter, building on the Media Pluralism Monitor data, we discuss the key issues of concern related to the journalists' safety, focusing on the attacks in the offline and online environment and the political elite's hostile criticism of the media. We analyse these issues in the context of Greece, Slovakia, and Spain, which share several common features regarding their media environment. Yet, these countries differ in risks to journalists' safety. We find, however, that despite different risk levels, the safety of journalists has been deteriorating in all three countries over the years. These findings have important implications for policymakers." (Abstract)

"Financing high-quality journalistic reporting is becoming increasingly difficult worldwide and economic pressure has intensified in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. t compromise the highest possible independence of journalism – a premise that also applies to scientific research. Here, the state is involved in funding, but peer review models reduce funding bias. However, systematic approaches as to how established funding models in research could be transferred to journalism are lacking. We attempt such a systematic transfer using the example of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). The transfer, based on an analysis of the complex DFG funding structures, was validated in 10 interviews with experts from science, journalism and foundations. Building on this, we developed a concept for a German Journalism Foundation (Deutsche Journalismusgemeinschaft, DJG), which awards funding to journalists and cooperative projects based on a peer review process. The funding priorities of the proposed organization range from infrastructure support to grants for investigative skills. Thus, unlike other models, it does not focus on funding specific topics in media coverage, but on areas such as innovation support, technology implementation and training. Although the model was designed for Germany, such a systematic transfer could also be tested for other countries." (Abstract)

es undermine the multiple situated ways in which farmers transform through ICTs, and new thinking strategies are needed to legitimize undervalued meanings of ICT-driven change. Drawing from economic geography the article introduces the diverse economies framework as a tool that helps validate indigenous knowledge by unpacking the centrality of informal livelihood practices. This is explored empirically through a seven-year-long qualitative study with a farmers’ cooperative in South India. The findings reveal forms of ICT-enabled change and empowerment that do not fit with official discourses of development but are critical for farmers’ sustainability. The article concludes that legitimizing indigenous knowledge requires a concerted academic effort to make diversity visible." (Abstract)

l health care, external support, and the imperative of emotional literacy in their training. Through semi-structured interviews with 20 Venezuelan journalists aged 30–62, this study sheds light on the emotional toll of reporting in Venezuela, where journalists face stressors such as economic uncertainty, political tensions, self-censorship, perceived repression, physical threats, natural disasters, and social unrest. Employing interpretative phenomenology and thematic analysis, the research reveals how pervasive risks render their work emotionally taxing, compounded by challenging living conditions and emotionally draining stories that spill over into their personal and family lives. While some seek psychological or religious support, financial constraints, cultural taboos, and geographical limitations hinder therapy for others. The findings underscore the necessity of emotional training for journalists, irrespective of gender, age, experience, contract status, or religion. Such training is proposed to equip journalists with coping mechanisms, ensuring the maintenance of ethical journalism amid adversities. Recognizing and addressing journalists’ emotional well-being emerges as crucial not only for their personal welfare but also for upholding journalistic standards." (Abstract)

n conjunction with knowledgeable health professionals and promoted media coverage of topics based on feedback in partner meetings and reports. Partners maintained ongoing relationships with Indigenous, Afro-descendant, rural, last-mile, and marginalized communities with insufficient health care, building capacities of local media sources and communicators to increase access to COVID-19 information. Internews collaborated with local partners, community communicators and media sources to adapt project activities to priority community needs. As a result, co-created sessions actively centered participants, were in local languages, used cultural codes specific to each community, and focused on context-specific concerns. In addition, Internews helped facilitate discussion spaces for community members to build dialogue with health experts to bridge gaps across Western and traditional medicine in addressing COVID-19 and other health issues. As the pandemic evolved, Internews also identified changing health priorities among focus communities and adapted trainings to mitigate the perceived changes, allowing project participants within these communities to more effectively reduce the spread of rumors related to COVID, vaccines, and other emerging health crises. Weekly radio programs on platforms like local Indigenous radio Radio Waira in Putumayo, Colombia incorporated intercultural approaches to discussing health topics to build trust." (Executive summary)
