journalism’s changing environment. These risks and uncertainties arise from four partially overlapping domains: politics, economy, technology, and news consumption. Accordingly, the WJS3 questionnaire addressed journalists’ safety, editorial freedom, professional roles, news influences, and labor conditions. Our survey confirms that journalism is under pressure. Journalists worldwide are often undercompensated, and more than one-third engage in secondary employment. Economic pressures on news organizations have intensified in most countries. Nearly half of journalists have been targeted with hate speech, while psychological, physical, and digital threats are more prevalent in the Global South than in the Global North. More than 300 researchers from 75 countries participated in WJS3. This report provides a concise overview of key global findings. Diese Neuorientierung ist nicht nur wissenschaftlich relevant, um die Unterrepräsentation weiter Teile der Welt und innerhalb westlicher Gesellschaften als Desiderata zu beschreiben und bestehende Forschungslücken zu schließen. Sie ist auch gesellschaftlich relevant und wird für die Zukunft von allergrößter Bedeutung sein. Die Erforschung der Welt muss heraus aus der Nische des akademischen Spezialistentums und ins Zentrum wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens gerückt werden. Die Globalisierung der Wissenschaft ist kein abgeschlossener Prozess, sondern eine Jahrhundertaufgabe, zu deren Bewältigung wir alle zur Mitwirkung aufrufen. Die Erforschung von nicht-westlichen Ländern sollte nicht nur in Krisenzeiten als relevant wahrgenommen werden. Insgesamt ist daher nicht nur eine verbesserte strukturelle Absicherung der internationalen Kommunikationswissenschaft an deutschen Hochschulen erforderlich, sondern auch eine Sensibilisierung des Fachs und der deutschen Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft, von der Fachgesellschaft DGPuK bis zu den Herausgeber*innen von in Deutschland erscheinenden Fachzeitschriften und den Verleger*innen von Fachverlagen. Das Fach kann und muss in puncto Internationalisierung besser werden. Und dies nicht nur in quantitativer Hinsicht (durch Konferenzteilnahmen und mehr Publikationen), sondern auch durch die Wertschätzung der globalen Vielfalt inhaltlicher Problemstellungen und intellektueller Denkrichtungen – über die USA und andere englischsprachige Länder hinaus. Die internationale Kommunikationsforschung sollte mehr als nur ein Nebenschauplatz der Kommunikationswissenschaft sein, denn nur so vermag sie, zentrale Annahmen über Medien und Kommunikationsprozesse, die wir seit langem für selbstverständlich gehalten haben, in Frage zu stellen." the events and interactions between media, politics and the online sphere. While the semi-liberal phase in the mid-2000s and the new technologies led to a vibrant blogosphere and opened up online spaces for otherwise marginalized voices, it took real grievances and real activism on the ground that interacted together. Since 2015, there are increasing signs of controlling the Internet: zero toleration policies towards dissent and criticism have marked the years through increased police control and imprisoning journalists, as well as takeover of all semi-independent media outlets and use of online surveillance technologies. Currently, more than 500 websites and news media are banned within Egypt [...] In addition to the restrictions, the professional media scene faces numerous crises: one of which is the erosion of the economic viability of media in times of a massive journalism crisis. Another crisis is the declining professionalism and reproduction of loyalist and propagandistic practices due to self-censorship and clientelist practices within a highly restrictive environment. These developments fragment the professional community of journalists across numerous political camps and weakens unionizing efforts. Finally, the audiences are increasingly pushed away from politics. Based on the analysis and challenges, the Egyptian media are heading into the unknown: “death of journalism”, extreme depoliticization of the public sphere and restrictive media environment weaken the media system. Under the current circumstances—and unlike former President Mubarak’s policies—no politician will push for progress and investments in the media sector. The Supreme Media Regulatory Council announced an ambitious digitization plan of the media; no clear agenda is seen, except tightening control and advancing loyalist media." (Abstract)
