"The Plan of Operation for Phase I of the Rural Press Project in Kenya was signed between the Government of Kenya and UNESCO in June 1979. This phase continued until 1983, to be succeeded by Phase II from 1984 to 1987. Phase III, the final phase of the project, lasted from 1987 until 1991 [...] Proj

ect Activities: The project secured the equipment and materials needed, trained the required personnel and established 11 rural newspapers throughout the country. Conclusion: From the evaluations performed and other reports submitted to UNESCO, there is no doubt that rural newspapers are an appropriate information and communication strategy in supporting development processes of rural societies. The overwhelming interest and enthusiastic embrace of this project by the rural communities are testimony to the fact that such newspapers are ideal for information communication for rural development empowerment and furtherance of participatory democracy."

"The fact that the number of titles from only six years [3.199] almost equals that of the considerably longer reporting period of the basic work [covering the period between 1960 and 1987, published in 1988] demonstrates the proliferation of publications in this field as well. t most of the titles are now briefly annotated and that the typographical design is now much more pleasing. As in the basic work, the catalogue is divided into monographs (132) and articles (3,067); among the latter, the very short (newspaper) articles predominate by far, just as the journals and newspapers analysed are very difficult to access.[1] It is worth mentioning that the proportion of French-language publications far exceeds that of English-language publications (not to mention the relatively few in other languages). As far as the information content of many contributions is concerned, even the bibliographer[2] expresses lasting doubts. Index: 1. co-authors; 2. film actors; 3. film festivals; 4. film titles; 5. directors; 6. other persons involved in the production; 6. African countries; 7. selected keywords."
