Two overview evaluations draw attention to the fact that the road to privatization is not necessarily an easy one, and that there are costs as well as benefits involved. Four cases studies, from G

nd enjoyed donor support. This study looks at its impact in Kenya and Tanzania, two neighbouring countries in East Africa who have different language policies and publishing backgrounds. A number of publishers and librarians in the two countries were interviewed, as were ABC and BAI staff in the UK. Records and files were consulted were possible. The study concludes that an expansion of the scheme is desirable as the demand for books supplied under the scheme is enormous, but the quantities shipped are still small. Calls on librarians to take the initiative and make a much stronger case for the importance of books and libraries, and to acquire local and African-published material more systematically. The authors also suggest that the possibility of establishing a Kiswahili Books Collective should be investigated." (Hans M. "This is a booklet with expenences of drama and theatre practices in Western Kenya. Practices that have in common that they were — in one way or another— aiming at development at a “grassroots” level. Something else they have in common is that these expenences are only known by a limited num

Performers are mostly concerned about the now-and-how and not so much about recording their expenences [...] The overall aim of this booklet is to expose the potential of drama/theatre as a learning rnedium, a working rnethod and a cornmurncation tool. This could inform grassroots NGOs, educationalists, drama teachers, theatre workers, animators, youth groups, community leaders, development organizations and policy makers." (Introduction, page 5)
