ve main challenges in the process of audience research in the region: (1) recruitment strategies, (2) time issues, (3) group dynamics, (4) gender issues in interviews and (5) the significance of culture. In dealing with regional media audiences, researchers confront challenges ranging from hostile attitudes, suspicions of researchers' motives and even outright distrust to overzealous collaboration. Beyond these political/cultural factors, socio-economic considerations, such as literacy rates, not only affect respondents' self-reports and response rates, but may fundamentally skew the recruitment process. While some of these challenges are rooted in the practice of audience research irrespective of cultural setting, sociocultural and political realities create challenges specific to the region." Er ist alltagskompatibel, aber wertkonservativ, weil er durch transnationale SAT-Produzenten für ein breites Publikum in einer Vielzahl von arabischen Ländern konzipiert ist, ohne dabei Anstoß bei religiösen und politischen Autoritäten erregen zu wollen. Er ist äußerlich fragmentiert, bietet aber dennoch die Möglichkeit der (virtuellen) Vergemeinschaftung und erfüllt damit die Ansprüche von post-modernen Gesellschaften, deren Elemente auf unterschiedliche Weise nach Führung, Sinn und Halt suchen und deren Identität sich in einer globalisierten Moderne über den Islam scheinbar aufwerten lässt. Optimistisch kann man also zusammenfassend von einer Pluralisierung des religiösen Diskurses durch die Medialisierung sprechen sowie von einer verstärkten Alltagsbezogenheit des Islams. Den staatlichen Eliten und den strategisch an sie gebundenen orthodoxen islamischen Einrichtungen und Strömungen wurde mit den religiösen Formaten in den neuen Medien das Monopol der Verbreitung religiöser Wahrheiten prinzipiell entzogen. Aus einer eher pessimistischer Sichtweise lässt sich aber auch feststellen, dass durch die Medialisierung des Islams eine neue Orthodoxie Einzug hält. Denn auch in den ambitionierteren Formaten von Amr Khaled und Yusuf al-Qaradawi geht es nicht um eine Auseinandersetzung über religiöse Streitfragen oder die Gegenüberstellung verschiedener Positionen im Islam, sondern es wird eine individualisierte spirituelle Führung angeboten und von den Rezipienten auch gesucht, die kritisches Denken zugunsten von wertkonservativen Vorgaben vernachlässigt." The goal for the study was to produce a baseline assessment of the networked public sphere in the Arab Middle East, and its relationship to a range of emergent issues, including politics, media, religion, culture, and international affairs. We found: a Country-Based Network: We found that the Arabic blogosphere is organized primarily around countries [...] Who are Arabic Bloggers? Demographic coding indicates that Arabic bloggers are predominately young and male. The highest proportion of female bloggers is found in the Egyptian youth sub-cluster, while the Maghreb/French Bridge and Syrian clusters have the highest concentration of males. Personal Life and Local Issues are Most Important: Overall, the writing of most bloggers is centered on personal, diary-style observations. Within this framework, the challenges facing Alhurra as it seeks to attain excellence in carrying out its mandate are those that must be addressed by all news organizations: Ensuring comprehensiveness of coverage; providing the breadth that the audience expects; • Imposing discipline in producing the news product to protect against personal and institutional biases that can infect a news product; • Offering diverse viewpoints about important issues from sources whose backgrounds and expertise contribute to a balanced news product; • Avoiding rumor and other unsubstantiated material; • Thoughtfully and thoroughly addressing the topics of greatest interest to the target audience, such as religion and local democratization efforts. Add to these Alhurra's additional duty to reflect and promote U.S. policies and it is clear that the task for this news organization is exceptionally difficult. For each of these duties, our diagnosis is that Alhurra is not performing at the level that it needs to reach to be successful. To fulfill Alhurra's mission requires being able to compete effectively in the Arab news marketplace. That will require expanded and more proficient coverage, and to reach this higher level will necessitate a significant budget expansion to enable broader reporting and more professional management. It will also require grappling with political issues involving journalistic independence and the realities of establishing the credibility needed to gain and keep an Arab audience." At the same time, the Arab world’s pay-TV industry is also rapidly expanding, with subscriber growth averaging 40 percent per year over the past several years. Pay-TV penetration is still low, however, varying from 5 percent in Egypt to 29 percent in the UAE. Demand for and consumption of television broadcasting is significantly stronger in the Arab world than in most other developing countries. Close family ties combined with often harsh weather conditions, low literacy rates, and a culture of oral communication have made television the centerpiece of family life in many Arab countries. Demand for audiovisual content is not, however, homogenous across countries. Although all the countries in the region share a common language and the majority a common religion, there are differences in culture, television consumption, and viewing preferences across demographic segments and countries. In addition, television preferences are rapidly changing and fragmenting, particularly among age and socioeconomic groups, and competition for viewers' attention is very strong and growing."
