"This book analyzes the different ways in which media are being used for community building and it also critically interrogates the concept of community itself. The authors do that from a variety of different perspectives, ranging from fundamental philosophical questions regarding community, to the

role of journalism, the possibilities of community building on a local, national and global level, online media communities as means of empowerment for marginalized groups, the representation of communities in the media, and the formation of learning communities. Although there is a clear dominance in focusing on the chances and possibilities opened up by the Internet, the role of more traditional media like magazines, radio and television is being examined as well. Both sides, the media representations with the identity positions they offer as well as the interpretations and meaning productions that take place by the users of the media, are taken into account to cover the full range of media as cultural tools of connectivity." marizes the normative evolution in human rights and explains how human rights have been mainstreamed into the activities of all UN agencies. It also reviews the main existing indicators for human rights and discusses their limitations for human rights based programming. Two hypothetical programme examples on access to clean water and the prevention of torture are used to show how indicators can be used for human rights programming. Finally the Guide offers advice on how COs can use indicators for all phases of programme design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation." (Abstract)

e of the dilemmas faced, and the options and approaches available when a research programme, institute or researcher is constructing a media strategy. It lays out some of the main steps in developing a strategy. This paper is complemented by Working with the Media: A guide for researchers, which includes practical guidance and tips for engagement with the media. In this paper the term ‘policy’ includes policy formulation, implementation and evaluation and is not restricted to that of government but includes international organisations, bilateral agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the private sector and others. The media is taken to include community, local, national and international forms of radio, print, television and online services." (Introduction)

a. A culturally sensitive approach founded on an integrated poverty analysis is desirable in all development cooperation interventions. Culture and media interventions can also contribute to the promotion of participation, dialogue and communication in interventions in other development cooperation areas. The purpose of the policy is threefold: to establish how supporting culture and media can contribute to the attainment of the goal of Swedish international development cooperation; to provide guidance for such interventions; and be the basis for increased collaboration with other areas of intervention within Swedish development cooperation (for example health, education and infrastructure)." rations, suitability of the language for the intended reader, whether and how they encourage active learning, whether they promote positive social and cultural values and/or diversity, their gender responsiveness in both text and illustrations, and other significant issues. The author concludes that "the Kenyan project was judged to be a success not only because it gave teachers a choice of quality textbooks and effectively liberalised the book trade, which had previously been dominated by a state centralist publishing system. It was also judged successful because the evaluation and selection of the textbooks was based on a fair and objective system which gave no publisher or textbook a significant advantage over any other. The Kenyan project was in that respect, and in others also, a model for other publishing industries to follow." (Hans M. Zell, Publishing, Books & Reading in Sub-Saharan Africa, 3d ed. 2008, nr. 608)
