"There is a great deal at stake for everyone in the future of Arab television. Political and social upheavals in this central but unsettled region are increasingly played out on television screens and in the tussles over programming that take place behind them. Al-Jazeera is of course only one playe

r among a still-growing throng of satellite channels, which now include private terrestrial stations in some Arab states. It is an industry urgently needing to be made sense of; this book does exactly this in a very readable and authoritative way, through exploring and explaining the evolving structures and content choices in both entertainment and news of contemporary Arab television. It shows how owners, investors, journalists, presenters, production companies, advertisers, regulators and media freedom advocates influence each other in a geolinguistic marketplace that encompasses the Arab region itself and communities abroad." culturales donde hoy en día se produce la «educación sentimental», y donde se moldean los valores y las ideologías sociales. Las ponencias focalizan su análisis en la cultura como mercancía, es decir, en los productos culturales ya no como «obras de arte» o como quehacer de «grandes autores», sino como simbolizaciones devenidas en cosas que, de acuerdo con la teoría marxista del fetichismo de la mercancía, encubren que su valor existe únicamente como producto social." "The use of comics as a campaigning tool for grassroots organisations is a relatively new phenomenon and has been tested so far only in India, some other South Asian countries and in a few countries in Africa. This manual on the creation of comics as a medium for communication of development ideas s

hares the experiences the authors gained in seven countries. It gives a number of examples of comics from these countries, photographs from workshops on grassroots comic creation, and manuals that demonstrate how to approach this communication medium with local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or with community members. It explains how to make wall poster comics, booklet comics, strips, and accordion folded mini comics for local distribution - at meeting places, bus stops, shops, offices, schools, on notice-boards and electricity poles, etc. Reproduction methods include: photocopying for issues up to 30-40 copies, screen printing for issues from 100 copies upwards, and offset printing for issues from 200-300 copies upwards." "This bibliography, by a Kenyan scholar and children’s author, lists 1,759 titles in English and in Kiswahili. In her introduction the author states that a proportion of the books were personally examined by her, while other entries are based on listings in Kenya Books in Print, publishers’ cata

logues, as well as catalogues issued by African Books Collective. It includes children’s books written by both African and non-African authors. The majority of the titles are published in Africa, but there are also listings of African children’s books published in the UK and in North America. Material is listed alphabetically by name of author. Each entry gives author name, title, page extents for some titles, ISBN, and name of publisher; names of illustrators are also given for a number of entries. There are no annotations, nor indications of reading levels or age groups. Includes a list of publishers, but which lacks address or distributor details. While this is a fairly comprehensive listing – and some public libraries may find it useful as a starting point for acquiring African children’s books – without annotations, evaluations, or analysis of any kind, it is difficult to see how the bibliography can serve much purpose in its present form."
