"The objective of the household survey is to measure the transformational development indicators on nutrition, immunization, education, water, diarrhoea management, household resilience, poorest households and HIV/AIDS. Development programs should aim to be able to use this survey method with a leve

l of precision and accuracy for measuring these eight indicators. This volume of the Transformational Development Indicators (TDI) field guide explains, step by step, how to design and implement the TDI household survey. Each step in the process is clearly numbered to assist staff in using this guide. Chapters 1-5 describe the actual process of survey implementation, which includes defining the survey and area to be surveyed, preparation of the questionnaire, determination of sample size and the selection of the sample. There are also sections on data collection and bias inherent with this method. Chapter 6 describes the steps involved in data analysis using the software provided by the Development Resources Team (DeRT). The appendices include additional resources that may be useful for training and learning about household survey method, random sampling. It includes sample questionnaires, as well as a glossary and bibliography of survey literature." (Introduction, page 7)

"The manual will be useful for a variety of people: professional graphic designers, editors and desktop publishers; business people and public servants; volunteers in community groups; printers and imagesetters; students of graphic design and desktop publishing. Not every section in the manual will

be useful for everyone. Nor is the manual aimed at teaching everyone how to print, imageset, use particular software or completely prepare a document to prepress level or to upload it to the Internet. What this book does discuss is how to make design decisions that best use these processes and to recognise their possibilities and limitations. The part called ‘Projects’ describes many of the projects an organisation may be considering. It provides methods of approaching each project and, in many cases, some ways to streamline the development or production time. There are helpful hints on saving money, too. The part called ‘Production’ starts with design issues such as layout, typography and colour, which affect almost all design projects, and moves on to prepress and printing, and describes types of paper and finishing processes [...]" (Why is this book useful?)

"Not long after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a memo from the American Press Institute went out to US news editors and reporters, advising them on the “correct” way to utilize photographs in crisis reporting. In part the directive said, “our backs are to

the podium and our cameras are focused on the faces of the crowd” (Lower 2001). This was curious, for among photojournalists the idea of using images to draw from and upon the public rather than to depict the events being witnessed was antithetical to what good journalism is supposed to do." "The use of folk arts in rural development clearly has limitations as to the role that it can play in changing people’s behavior, but it is an effective tool for communication in most cases. The greatest strength of this type of informal education lies in its ability to capture the audience’s at

tention through entertaining spectacles and to convey new ideas and information to people. In addition, the Bhats’ social position plays an important role in the education process, as they are a marginal community that has provided social commentary through performance arts for centuries. Thus by employing them, NGOs and government agencies appropriate the benefits of their ritual discursive authority. Also, these organizations are aided by the inversions of the social order that occur during shows because the folk artists are able to command the attention of large audiences and thus disseminate their messages among diverse groups of people. In addition, the kathputli tradition of North India is steeped in mythology and symbolism, and these traits give the puppets themselves special ideological status as metonyms and liminars. In turn, these attributes allow the puppets to exist in a realm that is different from that of live actors, and thus they can communicate more effectively as they are exempt from many of the rules and biases that are linked to human behavior. Despite the numerous benefits of using folk arts in development programs, follow-up sessions and more extensive education for villagers and performers are needed to change behaviors regarding complex issues. These performances are quite successful at conveying information, but people are unlikely to incorporate into their lives new ideas regarding issues like folk medicines." (Conclusion, page 63)
