"This study explores the sources of tuberculosis (TB) information used by Koreans, focusing specifically on how sociodemographic variables influence perceptions of source credibility and how the use of different information sources influences TB-related knowledge levels and risk perceptions. Based o

n the secondary cross-sectional data of the Korean National Tuberculosis Association, a series of analyses of variance and multiple regressions were conducted. The result showed that TV and the Internet are perceived as the most credible information sources, and that age, gender, and income predict credibility in different information sources. The TB-related knowledge was positively related to the use of TV/radio, interpersonal sources, and the Internet, whereas perceived susceptibility to TB was positively associated with the use of TV/radio and interpersonal sources. The findings suggest that health officers or public health campaign practitioners must understand their primary targets and select the most appropriate information sources to develop their campaigns." "Applied Theatre: Performing Health and Wellbeing is the first volume in the field to address the role that theatre, drama and performance have in relation to promoting, developing and sustaining health and wellbeing in diverse communities. and illness, it offers insight into different approaches to major health issues through applied performance. With a strong emphasis on the artistry involved in performance-based health responses, situated within a history of the field of practice, the volume is divided into two sections: Part One examines some of the key questions around research and practice in applied performance in health and wellbeing, specifically addressing the different regional challenges that dominate the provision of health care and influence wellbeing: how the aging population of the global north creates pressure on lifetime healthcare provision, while the global south is dominated by a higher birth rate and a larger population under 15 years old. Part Two comprises case studies and interviews from international practitioners that reflect the diversity of practices across the world and in particular differences between work in the northern and southern hemispheres. These case studies include a sanitation project in a Hmong refugee camp in Thailand in the 1980s, and the sanitation and rural development projects initiated by the traveling theatre troupes of a number of University theatre departments in Africa – Makerere in Kampala, Uganda; Botswana; Lesotho and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – which began in the 1960s. It considers the emergence of Theatre for Development's use as a health approach, considering the work of Laedza Batanani and the influences of Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed." "The Handbook on Advocacy, Communication, and Social Mobilization (ACSM) for RNTCP aims to provide momentum and build ACSM capacity by clearly describing the processes involved in planning and implementation of ACSM activities in support of TB control and prevention. It seeks to help the reader bett

er understand the significance of ACSM in TB-control interventions under the Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP). The handbook provides practical guidelines and describes the ‘nuts and bolts’ of operational activities with examples of planning and implementing different ACSM programs and activities. The experience of assessing the ACSM scenario in five states, viz., Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Meghalaya, conducted by IHBP during 2012, came useful in developing this handbook. This document remains a dynamic and living document that will be updated with inputs from the field during its operationalization at state and district levels. The handbook has been organized into seven parts: Part 1 of the handbook describes the background and context of TB-related ACSM in India and provides conceptual clarity on the strategy framework of ACSM as distinct but mutually supporting interventions for TB prevention and cure. Part 2 outlines the strategy and explains step-by-step processes of ACSM situation analysis to prepare robust, evidence-based program implementation plans (PIPs). Part 3 describes ACSM objectives, approach, and implementation plan. Part 4 discusses the selection of channels and messages based on the ‘strengths’ and ‘weaknesses’ of different channels to enable selection of costeffective channels/vehicles of message delivery to targeted audiences and design of appropriate messages. Part 5 describes the different tools that could be used for ACSM activities and preparation of PIPs at district and state levels as well as describes various ACSM activities with practical operational details for implementation. Part 5 outlines the processes and targeted staff for ACSM capacity building. Part 6 emphasizes the need for rigorous monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and provides simple guidelines for conducting M&E to make ACSM activities more effective in support of RNTCP." ing affected communities in the fight against TB. ACSM activities also can battle stigma, correct misconceptions about TB, and identify new funding mechanisms to support TB control—all of which are essential to sustaining and increasing the gains that we have made in TB control over the past several decades. This curriculum is designed for training TB control professionals and civil society activists at national and local levels who are involved in ACSM efforts. It is designed to provide countrylevel staff with the specific knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate effective ACSM interventions linked to specific TB control objectives. The curriculum structure and methodologies proposed by PATH were approved by the Stop TB Partnership ACSM Country Level Core Group members for global use. The original version of the curriculum was significantly refined and modified in response to partners’ comments and to meet participants’ needs." (Introduction, page 2)

"The purpose of this document is to highlight cases in which Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) interventions have contributed to a positive outcome of tuberculosis (TB) control activities directed to a range of audiences and settings. s who are interested in successfully integrating ACSM strategies and activities into TB control programming, as well as for decision-makers who can provide greater political and financial support for ACSM activities at the national, sub-national and international level. ACSM is a relatively new technical component within the Stop TB Strategy, but its application is increasing quickly. In recent years, many partners and countries have adopted ACSM models – notably including the engagement of communities and patients in TB care and prevention – with the purpose of expanding the reach of TB programmes in innovative and effective ways. A significant differentiator of ACSM strategies is their focus on patient and community empowerment. This element promotes the integration of community-based programming into the otherwise medical and vertical health service delivery model that has traditionally been employed by TB control programmes." "Objectives: to assess the challenges in reducing tuberculosis (TB) in prisons in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Paraguay and propose ways to address them through communication interventions. Methods: challenges to two central goals of TB control—early diagnosis of positive cases and successful application

of the directly observed treatment, short course (DOTS) strategy— were examined. Data were gathered (through in-depth, structured interviews) and focus groups were conducted in the prisons that housed the largest number of male inmates in each country. Interviewees and focus group participants included program directors, administrative personnel, correctional health and security staff, and incarcerated people who were or had been under treatment for TB and had participated as “peers” in health services. Results: the findings showed a range of entrenched obstacles for adequate TB control. Stigmatizing attitudes and low knowledge about TB among inmates and key prison personnel discouraged people living in prisons from seeking diagnosis and treatment. Systemic problems in prison health services, along with squalid living conditions, lack of coordination between national TB programs and prison health systems, and insufficient allocation of resources to health prevented the provision of adequate TB prevention and care. Conclusion: in addressing the barriers to effective TB control in prison systems in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Paraguay, a participatory approach to communication is necessary." (Abstract)

"This paper is a briefing for health practitioners, TB programmers, policymakers, media professionals and people affected by TB. Based on an analysis of media coverage of TB, it argues that health professionals and TB specialists should be supported to engage more effectively with the media so that
...
the media can, in turn, play a more critical role in national and international responses to public health concerns. The briefing aims to raise awareness of TB and to raise its media profile, while at the same time highlighting key obstacles to effective reporting on TB and other health issues. It concludes with practical suggestions as to how the relationship between the health and media sectors can be strengthened to enhance the media’s contribution to global efforts to control TB. The paper highlights findings from a content analysis of print media in 12 countries undertaken in 2006 by the Panos Global AIDS Programme. It also draws upon recent reports and initiatives around health journalism. Although 7 of the 12 countries included in the analysis are ranked among the highest TB burden countries in the world, the research found little coverage of TB in local or national print media." by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and others involved in TB control, including communications officers, epidemiologists, program supervisors, TB medical specialists, nurses, bacteriologists, statisticians, health educators, logistics officers and trainers. Health managers of refugee and displaced population camps, prisons and large private enterprises, such as factories and mines, will also find this handbook useful. Additionally, teachers in medical, nursing, laboratory and public health schools may find valuable information for training their students in effective, multi-disciplinary TB control."
