y point of view, the book's 100 key steps and tools provide models of motivation, analysis and communication structure. Content includes how to begin a campaign, motivating people, research and development, issue mapping, planning using the campaign planning star, organizing communications including visual language, constructing campaign propositions, insight into news media, how to keep a campaign going, how to use old and new media and what to do and what not to do. The final chapter reviews the bigger picture, examining how campaigns became a form of politics. It also provides new research material on how issues mature and become 'norms', and the consequent problems for campaigning." (Publisher description)

The first section of this report sets out the principles for effective media work during SALW control interventions, and offers useful tools for applying them. The case studies from which the principles are derived have been included in Section Two. They summarise the experiences of project staff that have worked with the media during the recent micro-disarmament interventions in the region." (Page 1)

"Over the past eight years, GreenCOM has learned a great deal about what works and what doesn’t. The project has also functioned as a clearinghouse for common questions that people around the world raise about EE&C. Most importantly, GreenCOM has demonstrated the value of EE&C and helped managers,

planners, and decision makers understand that it is much more than just posters, brochures, videos, and textbooks. EE&C encompasses a wide variety of activities and products that lead to changed behavior. Although GreenCOM has accumulated and disseminated a wealth of lessons about influencing the environmental behavior of diverse individuals, communities, and even governments, there is much left to learn and do. In the following pages you will learn how environmental education and communication can benefit you in your work. This booklet summarizes the lessons learned from eight years of experience in over thirty countries. It provides environmental protection and natural resource managers, planners, and decision makers with insight on how EE&C can help them achieve their goals and objectives." The handbook concludes by demonstrating how to measure effects, causality and public opinion change to determine what the campaign accomplished. A helpful summary and checklist for the student and practitioner using survey research is provided at the end." (Publisher description)

"The media can be a major force for improving the quality of government in developing and transitional countries – which is critical if opportunities for the poor and disadvantaged are also to improve. To fulfil this role the media need room to manoeuvre – tight government regulation and censors

hip produce media which are ineffective and lacking in credibility. Too little regulation, on the other hand, may lead to the domination of commercial media ruled by advertising, to the detriment of serious content and of the interests of those without purchasing power – i.e. the poor. What is needed are policies that impose responsibilities as well as freedoms on the commercial sector, and that clarify and facilitate the role of the public service media. Effective media also need good management, and good professional and technical skills. The main purpose of this guide is to help governments and development agencies to decide whether to support the development of the media, and if so how." (Introduction, page 3)
