omprehensive search strategy yielded 38 HIV/AIDS campaign evaluation articles published in peer-reviewed journals, representing 34 distinct campaign efforts conducted in 23 countries. The articles were coded on a variety of campaign design and evaluation dimensions by two independent coders. Results indicated that compared with the previous systematic review (1986-1998 period), campaigns increasingly have employed the following strategies: (1) targeted defined audiences developed through audience segmentation procedures; (2) designed campaign themes around behavior change (rather than knowledge change); (3) used behavioral theories; (4) achieved high message exposure; (5) used stronger research designs for outcome evaluation; and (6) included measures of behavior (or behavioral intentions) in outcome assessments. In addition, an examination of 10 campaign efforts that used more rigorous quasi-experimental designs revealed that the majority (8 of 10) demonstrated effects on behavior change or behavioral intentions. Despite these positive developments, most HIV/AIDS campaigns continue to use weak (i.e., preexperimental) outcome evaluation designs. Implications of these results for improved design, implementation, and evaluation of HIV/AIDS campaign efforts are discussed." (Abstract)

work concerns the technical dimension of radio, but there is also a significant body of work on, for example, radio history, on the nature of speech on radio, on radio drama and so on. This body of writing is fairly puny in comparison with the literature on film and television but it is important nonetheless. Turning to the slightly more introspective aspect of this book, the consideration of radio studies itself, the published literature is almost non-existent. Very few writers have turned their attention to the nature of this subdivision of media or communication studies and I hope that what follows will take a step in that direction [...] The concepts chosen here are derived from two sources. The first source is the business of producing radio itself; this includes the genres and styles of programming (the phone-in, news, comedy and so on) and other central ideas and practices of the radio industry (for example the radio format, the audience, radio journalism). These are terms which are used in the radio industry itself and so have a professional currency. The second source for my list comes from writing about radio from within the academic field of media studies, including radio studies. So, for example, the idea that radio is an ‘intimate’ medium is a recurrent theme in the radio studies literature, as is the ‘liveness’ of radio and the idea of the radio DJ’s ‘persona’. These are not terms, however, often used in the radio industry but belong to the critical discourse about the medium which tries to make sense of it from the outside. In addition there are a few concepts here which are not radio specific; the concept of the ‘imagined community’ was not developed with radio in mind but appears in a number of books on the subject. ented towards developing countries and emerging democracies, community radio stations in the West are often forced to operate in the margins. Case studies on the US, the UK and Belgium are presented. Some influence of distinct regulatory paradigms can be observed, but overall in each of these countries community radio stations have a legacy of struggle for their existence and survival. This exposes the need to account for the distinct nature of community radio in (Western) regulatory regimes. A common thread in the cases being presented is the difficulty involved in (local) community radio legitimating its existence on the FM-band alongside commercial and public broadcasters. Unlike these, community radio movements have little lobbying power and are usually positioned as rogue and unprofessional actors within the broadcasting community. From a democratic perspective emphasizing the importance of participation and civic culture, Western media policies urgently need to create an enabling environment for participatory community radio initiatives."
