en developing training programmes for textbook authors to create local capacity in the writing of textbooks for local language teaching. It reports about the main lessons learnt during the execution of the programme. Ingrid Jung argues that the development of societies depends crucially on the access to and the written processing of information, and discusses what this means for local language publishing. She concludes that the present situation in Africa is characterized by a broad gap between what is necessary to contribute to social change and education, and what local book industries offer in the field of local language publications for educational and other purposes. “To satisfy the demand for books and learning materials in African languages in the long run, it is necessary to contribute to the development of national and regional publishing houses and to the capacity building of all links of the book chain." "The media industry in Tanzania has gone through four major phases. There were the German colonial media established to serve communication interests (and needs) of the German administration. By the same time, missionaries tried to fulfil their tasks by editing a number of papers. There were the med

ia of the British administration established as propaganda tool to support the colonial regime, and later the nationalists’ media established to agitate for self-governance and respect for human rights. There was the post colonial phase where the then socialist regime of independent Tanzania sought to „Tanzanianize“ the media - the aim being to curb opposition and foster development of socialistic principles. There was the transition phase where both economic and political changes world-wide had necessitated change in the operation of the media industry. This is the phase when a private and independent press was established in Tanzania. Martin Sturmer goes through all these phases and comprehensively brings together what we have not had in Tanzania before: A researched work of the whole media history in Tanzania." (Preface)

"A report commissioned by the South African government's Department (now Ministry) of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology to research South Africa's cultural industries and propose strategies for their growth and development. The term "cultural industries" is used here to describe a wide variety o

f cultural activities, most of which have commercial objectives as their prime motivating force, with activities taking a number of different forms, from the manufacture or creation of products to the marketing and distribution thereof. The cultural industries on which the report concentrated are the music industry, the craft industry, the publishing industry and the film and television industries. The methodology followed for the study is in the nature of an industry strategy analysis. Each sector report is principally an economic analysis, providing baseline data for each of the four sectors, and focusing on the economic and social contribution of each sector; the impediments to growth, and the opportunities for employment creation and competitive development. Each sector report concludes with strategic policy recommendations for interventions by both the public and private sector. The book publishing industry is covered in sector 4, electronic publishing in sector 5, and other sectors are devoted to an overall evaluation of the four segments of the industry, a SWOT analysis, and a final section devoted to an analysis of global trends in the publishing industry."
