logical power [...] Far from portraying a unidirectional flow, wherein only foreigners have published information and instructed Pacific Islanders, this dissertation argues that some islanders have sought to participate in book publishing so as to express their views and/or those of their associates or communities, and this in turn has contributed to persuading and influencing other people, sometimes even across the Pacific. The organization of mission societies around publications, for example in biblical material, schoolbooks, or laws, often reinforced indigenous power, but it also eased the imposition of colonial rule. Ironically, command of text culture assisted islanders to negotiate with new and sometimes stronger political forces. The colonial era has reinforced the role of text culture in the organization of society, and published reiteration of particular languages, customs, and geographical boundaries has helped to shape and reshape polities that have endured well into the age of independent nation-states." The Project that commenced in December of 2002 was intended to run for a year but was extended twice ending in March of 2006 [...] It was concluded that the Project did achieve its goal of strengthening the teaching and learning environment in the SoL at the University of Zambia (UNZA). Having increased the levels of research activities among the lecturers chosen as authors of the books published under the Project, the resultant books were of great use to the lecturers, tutors and students in the SoL as they were; readily available, affordable to the students, up-to-date and most importantly made reference to Zambian Statutes and Case Law. This was the opposite of the imported books that were hard to come by, expensive and made no reference to Zambian Statutes and Case Law. The UNZA benefitted from the SoLBP in that it re-established itself as not only a training institution but also as a research institution capable of producing its own textbooks. The UNZA rose above other training institutions offering legal training as the other institutions incorporated the books into their curricular. These institutions include: the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE), the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA), the Zambia Open University (ZOU) and the Cavendish University of Zambia (CUZ). The books have also found reference relevance among practising lawyers and Judges of the High Court of Zambia. However, the evaluation found that the project funds had been mismanaged, allegedly by the project staff and there was a court case brought against them by the SoL. This was attributed to the weak monitoring systems by the SoL in the third year of project implementation as the first two years have proved to have had these systems in place as indicated by proper funds management." During the period analyzed, the CBI had an average participation in GDP of 3.3 per cent. This rate is similar to the share of electricity and gas, slightly higher than the contribution of crude oil and natural gas extraction and more than double that of coffee and coal. The latter comparison emphasizes the importance of the CBI in national output since coffee and coal are two important Colombian exports, which have a significant share in the global market. The composition of the CBI is as follows: the core industries represent 56 per cent of the total value added generated by these economic activities, followed by interdependent (24 per cent), non-dedicated support (13 per cent) and partial copyright industries (8 per cent)." highly entertaining book tells the story how they did it, and how publishing relationships were developed and nurtured with a very large number of African writers, including some of the continent’s now foremost writers such as Chinua Achebe, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Nuruddin Farah, Alex la Guma, Bessie Head, Dennis Brutus, Dambudzo Marechera, and many more. The focus is on the first twenty-five years of the series from 1962 to 1988. Rich in anecdotal material on many of Africa’s best known writers, the book offers a narrative how the now famous series came together. It “provides evidence of the ways in which estimation by a publisher of the work of writers grows and, sadly on occasion, diminishes”, and gives examples of “how the views of publishers and their advisers emerge as they consider a new manuscript, and then coalesce and change as they assess further work by the same author.” The book is interspersed with archival photographs and portraits of African writers by George Hallett, whose photographs were used on many of the books’ covers. Much of the contents consist of extracts from correspondence between James Currey and the numerous writers that were published in the series, as well as correspondence with literary agents, copy editors, correspondence with Currey’s colleagues at (then) Heinemann offices in Kenya and Nigeria, together with extracts from readers’ reports. The various chapters vividly capture the drama and energy of the whole enterprise: the publishing risks involved, dealing with writers egos and temperaments, their financial needs, their perceptions about publication rights issues, and their sometimes unrealistic expectations of sales and royalty earnings."
