"Although practice theory has been a mainstay of social theory for nearly three decades, so far it has had very limited impact on media studies. This book draws on the work of practice theorists such as Wittgenstein, Foucault, Bourdieu, Barth and Schatzki and rethinks the study of media from the per

spective of practice theory. Drawing on ethnographic case studies from places such as Zambia, India, Hong Kong, the United States, Britain, Norway and Denmark, the contributors address a number of important themes: media as practice; the interlinkage between media, culture and practice; the contextual study of media practices; and new practices of digital production. Collectively, these chapters make a strong case for the importance of theorising the relationship between media and practice and thereby adding practice theory as a new strand to the study of anthropology of media." También se proponen actividades destinadas al autoconocimiento, a la reflexión sobre la imagen que podemos tener de nosotros mismos y cómo ésta es percibida por la gente que nos rodea. Este libro pretende ser un trabajo de refuerzo de las actitudes personales, de la autoestima y de la construcción de un criterio personal más allá de las opiniones de los otros, y quiere, en definitiva, fomentar la autonomía de pensamiento para favorecer la diversidad de ideas en los trabajos en grupo." r. The objective of the present document, therefore, is to reveal and analyze the diversity and complexity of these phenomena - often falsely associated with “African tradition” - related to beliefs in witchcraft and the “mystical” world. Using examples from sub-Saharan Africa, the study aims to clarify the basis for certain social practices that are wholly or partially misunderstood by western observers. This ignorance of local social norms, creates a gulf of misunderstanding between local social actors and the international framework of norms. Behaviours commonly associated with accusations of witchcraft include violence, mistreatment, abuse, infanticide and the abandonment of children. From a western perspective, such practices are violations of the rights of children. The objective of this study is to understand both the complexity and the variety of the phenomena described, as well as the causes, which are not only cultural and social, but also economic and political. The study targets child protection agencies and aims to promote better understanding of local representations and beliefs, as well as to provide guidance on effective child protection interventions." "The guiding principle behind the development of this tool has been to produce a ‘user-friendly’ resource for journalism educators who want to include what we might term as ‘anti-discrimination or human rights awareness’ dimension into their teaching. To that end practical exercises which ar

e easily adaptable and transferable in terms of context and duration have been collected, and are presented here in a brief and “jargon free” manner. The main aim is that these exercises be read, used, adapted and integrated into current teaching practice. In addition, it was taken for granted that all teachers and academics are familiar with the media culture within which they operate and, therefore, this toolbox does not include specific information of that nature. What is included is a selection of links to relevant European codes and laws. This is to help bolster students’ understanding of the importance given to human rights and anti-discrimination at European level and to provide the relevant sources of information for investigating the legal frameworks. The bulk of the content comprises teaching examples. These have been used by tutors in a variety of situations. For the most part, they have been taught to journalism students at Universities and Colleges, but some techniques have also been applied in-service with media professionals." What is the situation of the Roma community? What legislation protects the right to equality? The material contained in this guide was compiled based on the analysis of real news stories which appeared in the Spanish media. Aware that the Roma community is not always treated fairly in the media in other countries either, we decided to translate and publish this guide in English with the support of the Spanish Council for the promotion of equal treatment and non-discrimination for reason of racial or ethnic origin, in light of the special interest of media professionals at international level." ed as an authentic alternative to popular television and film dramatizations. It argues that the media coverage of 9/11 and the subsequent ‘war on terror,’ however, has revealed how the formation of communities of witness and commemoration around ‘traumatic events’ can perpetuate violence and inequality. The book explains how Benjamin, Adorno and Barthes, drawing from psychoanalysis, analyzed the roles of fantasy, ideology and collective identification in mass media, and began to understand trauma as an authentic experience of modernity. It proposes that the insights of these earlier theorists, along with more recent arguments by Derrida, Agamben and Zizek, continue to provide important perspectives on today’s politics of mediated shock and terror."
